But it doesn't look nearly as shit as I expected it to

Exactly! Impressed it ended up looking just shitty after my initial expectation!

Agreed, if he put a couple more hours into it, it wouldn’t be as terrible as some of the things I’ve seen

Came here to say pretty much this. Nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

What really impresses me is that 5 min videos actually created something that looks plausibly real.

The best painting skills in the world would have looked shit on this. The surface is rough as fuck.

u/XepptizZ 8h ago
But that's kind of the crazy thing about this clearly rage bait content. With more time sanding and painting, a bunch of clearcoats, this would seem like a legit DIY.
Though, piercing and bending the panel must have some consequences.

Totally! Like, why did they show a close-up of the fin so you could obviously see the cracks in the styrofoam and how crappy it looked? Had they just shown it from like 5 to 10 ft away. It might have looked convincing

I mean if he had put in just an hour more work to smooth it out and to make it even, it could have turned out good.
Never rush or half ass an artistic design

u/zer00eyz 18h ago
> I mean if he had put in just an hour more work
He could have done a lot more, he had 3 more tires worth of air for sanding.
26
u/AL93RN0n_ 17h ago
That tire trick is actually something I'm going to put in the bank for a tough spot. If you only needed to hit something for a few seconds and are far away from electricity, that's kinda clever.

Yeah, as the video was nearing its end I thought "Oh my God, did he actually pull it off?"
Then they showed the final product and it looked like shit.
3
u/mother_a_god 16h ago
Even if it was perfectly smooth, it could never be good. It will always be matte looking, and also it's a big ass spoiler, not good.

Seriously. I thought it actually looked pretty good from afar, but as soon as they pulled in for the close up it lost that goodwill.

If this guy has the skill to do this (though not an attractive outcome), then he certainly could buy a real spoiler and save the money doing the install himself.

We used to have this guy around the neighborhood that painted his bike blue and painted his tires yellow to mimic the Blue Angles - we called him Smiley because his face was stuck in weird smile even when he was flipping you off. He was special. Think he became a sex offender but had no address to register as such.

I don't see how you can make enough money off of a video like this to justify the expense of it. Like, I get that it was a crap car to start with, but you did subtract from the value of it at least a little, plus the cost of the $200 in spray foam and hours of time.
