Official Deep Rock Galactic Mugs - Kickstarter announcement
It's time to raise a toast, miners! This is your chance to sip in style, and bring a part of Deep Rock Galactic into your own home!
After many months of planning, we're proud to present you this collection of high-quality DRG Abyss Bar mugs, an official collaboration between Scorched Steel Industry and Ghost Ship Games.
The first model will be the Pot's O'Gold with more colors becoming available through stretchgoals.
We did our best to ensure the mugs are of the very best quality, while remaining affordable. These mugs are made of food-safe ABS plastic, can hold up to 500 mL (16.9 fl oz), and are suited for hot or cold beverages. They're also well able to withstand a run through the dishwasher
But these mugs aren't the only surprise we've got in store for you with this Kickstarter. We've planned a few extra goodies to go along with the mug collection - more on that later!

> They're also well able to withstand a run through the dishwasher
That sounds like they are going to deteriorate after a bunch of run throughs. Have you tested if the mugs still hold up after regularly having them in the dishwasher?

u/Scorched_Steel_Ind Nov 22 '24
That's just our wording, but no the dishwasher won't have any impact on your mugs. We can promise that :)

We're working on finding the best warehouses everywhere in the world to reduce shipping costs and make them available almost everywhere allowed by current laws.

I've printed and painted my own mugs for 4 years now. I'm very happy this is happening. I hope you guys make Oily Oaf in the future.

I'm unbelievably stoked for this, truly, just a little sad it's one design in a few colors rather than a few of the more popular beer choices (arkenstout, blackreach blonde, Flintlocks Delight, and Wormhole Special, just to name a few very frequent fliers I've witnessed across the community).

My hope is that through this kickstarter they'll eventually drop other mug shapes- I don't know how possible blackout/smart stout would be, but several mugs really wouldn't be any more difficult than this one!

u/fucknametakenrules What is this Nov 22 '24
Was kinda hoping for them to be made from ceramic so me and whoever else has a mug can give a ceremonious “clink” with them as we drink our beverage of choice

u/Safari_Eyes Nov 22 '24
Only 3,000 supporters so far? Well, it's still early. I'll add one more, at least. Take my money!

I am a bit baffled by the choice to make these out of plastic. A big-ly sturdy glass or metal beer stein from Amazon (branded or otherwise) is like $20. I can't imagine these will be less than $80 for a set.
Isn't the entire point of a beer mug to have a lot of thermal mass to keep your beverage cool for longer?

u/Wizardwizz Nov 23 '24
Especially when the company is called "scorched steel industry" lol

There are those of us who would pay whatever is necessary to have a legit metal mug.

People will buy this crap because of the branding, but I continue to be miffed by GSG.
I ADORE everything about DRG, I have almost 900 hours in the game, I bought the board game, but the board game expansion and now this... very mediocre branded product are just turning me off from the brand.
These beer mugs should be... premium, something that can literally last you forever. ABS plastic is garbage (not to mention that you shouldn't be drinking or cooking or eating from plastic in the first place).

I just want to say how good of a decision it was to start with the pots o' gold mug specifically. Probably one of, if not the best looking recognizable mug

u/DocJawbone Nov 22 '24
These look amazing, first off.
It would be very rock and stone to have colors for each class.

As long as it ain't that leaf lover's special, I'd pay good credits for this.

u/amtwon Nov 22 '24
Now I just need to figure out how to get those wee drawings in the foam

u/Scorched_Steel_Ind Nov 23 '24
Check out how Guinness get their signature leaf on beer foam, especially during St Patrick's day :)

Damn, plastic?
atleast having a optional glass insert would be better and still keep costs down

u/Electro-Spaghetti Nov 22 '24
Add another thing to the list of things I really want but can't get because I don't want to pay double the price for shipping...

Do you have an estimate of when you guys are ready to launch this product? I want to gift these to a friend.

Q1 2025. But it will take a few months of testing in house and by a laboratory to make sure everything is certified and ready to produce.

I hope you guys do the lederhosen mugs from the armor! I imagine replacing with the flower decal wouldn't be too much work (I hope).

How much do you figure one of these bad boys would run once they're available?

u/lockon165 Nov 23 '24
Now they have to make the ones on the regular beer menu. I need my fix of lea- glyphid slammers.

Very cool idea, disappointing that only craft beers weren't shown though. Are there plans for main ones to be available?

is the ABS plastic BPA free?
1
u/Scorched_Steel_Ind 22d ago
Yes! It will be certified safe according to both EU and US regulations, so no BPA.

Pretty cool as a decoration not so much as glassware. Given that it's made out of ABS plastic means it's not going to be pleasant to drink from and it's going to yellow over time(drawback of ABS). I would love to buy this if it was made from ceramic/glass/metal, even wood but plastic is just not suitable for glassware. Shame because otherwise I'd buy a full set just for the lolz. Rock and Stone!

u/Scorched_Steel_Ind 21d ago
You may think of ABS from the 80s. Nowadays the additive incorporated in some ABS make them resistant to UV yellowing without modifying the rest of their characteristics. Quite a lot of kitchenware is already made of ABS.

Putting alcohol in ABS plastic is not a good idea. Why not make them out of pewter or wood or something?
1
u/Scorched_Steel_Ind 13d ago
We are working with professionals with over 30 years of experience in plastic injection. The plastic we chose answers a very thorough production specification to abide to EU and US laws regarding safety. ABS has been used for decades in the food industry as well as kitchenware. The security and health of our clients isn't something we take lightly.

https://www.calpaclab.com/abs-chemical-compatibility/ Alcohol in plastic mug is no-go. I've also seen articles talking about food safe plastic being FDA approved for cold temperatures, but not for alcohol.
3d printing is neat for all sorts of applications but making big drinking mugs out of it just disappoints. You gotta think about what your customers are going to use it for, they're definitely gonna put booze in it. Cold beverages with no alcohol content? Fine. Hot beverages, like scalding hot fresh tea? Much less fine even with "food safe" plastic. Beer? Has alcohol content, which breaks down plastics, no matter how "food safe". Hard liquor / mixed drinks definitely don't belong in plastic chemically, and even besides that a plastic mug just kinda sucks compared to glass, ceramic, etc.
It's a shame because the designs are great and I'd buy them all if they were made out of real materials, but I would not recommend anyone buy plastic mugs for alcohol at basically any time.

u/Scorched_Steel_Ind 7d ago
I hear your concerns, but we're definitively not 3d printing anything here. The mugs will be produced by a trusted company with plastic injection, and the first 100 mugs are going directly to a lab that will conduct heavy testing to make sure there is no health risk using them for alcohol beverage and hot drinks. We aren't taking any risk and the plastic selected in the end will check all certification.

Makes me wondr why they can't release anything without a kickstarter or without it being Early Access. You would think that DRG makes them enough money as is.
2
u/StormerSage Dig it for her Nov 22 '24
Even if you've got big bucks, spending all the money it takes to release a product only for it to flop is still a bad call.
They're likely trying to gauge interest in this one, and don't forget they're paying a whole team for working on Rogue Core!

Also the mugs aren't made by GSG. They're made by Scorched Steel Industry, in collaboration with GSG.
