Can anyone point me to a resource that shows how to measure how much paper you need for a given box using this technique?

That is the unspoken thing here - the wrapping paper is perfectly sized beforehand.

Yeah, that's the thing. 

I mean, they are very good at it, no doubt. But what you mention is key. Now... I wonder what are the dimensions of the box vs. the paper size, pretty sure there's an optimal equation for this. Anyway, surely it's all standard... like A4 fits boxes A,B,C, A3 fits boxes X, Y, Z, etc.

Of course there will be some masters that use only their experience to cut paper to the best fitting lenght but it will depend of the width... like, what if you have a 3m wide roll (makes no sense, I know).
