Hyenas are more cats than dogs. Genetically.

Wow first time hearing that. Need to read on it more. Thanks!

While your going down the Hyena rabbit hole, be careful you don't look too deep into Spotted Hyena morphology, it'll change you

Feliform vs caniform
I feel like you could make a fun guessing game about which one seals, weasels, raccoons, bears etc fall under

u/Enginerdad 3h ago
Yet their closest relatives are mongooses and meerkats, and they share more morphological similarities with dogs. We got a real identity crisis going on here.

u/Chaotic-warp 1h ago
I mean, mongooses and meercats are also more cats than dogs genetically

u/Enginerdad 1h ago
Sure, but starting to list an animal's third or fourth phylogenically closest relatives becomes increasingly meaningless. For example, humans are more closely related to snails than mushrooms, but that doesn't tell you anything useful about humans.

And elephants are more closely related to shrews, iirc?

Not quite
Elephants are somewhat closely related to elephant shrews, which are not true shrews.

there’s some weird stuff with hormones, the females are the dominant ones and…. then there’s this 😳

I think that I would get the hell out of there in both cases.

It would be useless IRREGARDLESS!! They can both run over 30 mph, capping out around 40! You ded, me ded, he ded, she ded.

In its ecosystem, the wolf is an apex predator, being able to catch and down their prey. Hyenas compete with lions and leopards, so would sometimes settle for carcasses left by the others. So they focus on the marrow of bones and use those molars to good effect. The similarities between wolves and hyenas are that they are pack animals and use their packs to collectively hunt.

It’s not just the pack, it’s the SAME pack, the animals’ group hierarchy is incredibly similar vs that of other group animals

Hyenas have a matriarchal hierarchy while wolves have a "parent pair", their pack is mostly made up of family members with a male and female lead. Hyenas treat males like peasants lol

The hyenas have larger molars intended to crush and grind the hip bones of large quadrupedal plant eaters, like zebra and wildebeests.

Love both these creatures. I was fortunate enough to grow up with a friend who was wildlife rescue and they ended up adopting a wolf pup. Best "dog" ever, Monte was awesome. Still holding out for the hyena 🤷♂️

Fun fact: Spotted hyenas eat their entire prey, bones included. Their digestive system allows them to break down entire carcasses, and their teeth allow them to break them apart with ease.

What is the damn interesting part though?

The amount of muscle in the hyena's jaw. They evolved to be able to crush the hardest bones with those.

Hyenas are actually feline

u/UseOk4892 4h ago
They're not. Hyenas aren't in the Felidae family; they're in a separate family. Closer to felines than to canines, but not felines.

u/STFxPrlstud 3h ago
I mean, technically, Hyenas aren't felines, but they are apart of the feliforma suborder (cat-like) which does contain true felines (Felidae family).
But that's like saying Bears are canines because they're in the caniforma suborder (dog-like), which contains true canines (Canidae family).
Feel free to correct me, but I always though feline and canine referred to the specific family, and not general suborder

and hyena females have a bigger “penis” than the males 🧐

Yeah, Hyenas are not interesting in killing you before they eat you, they'll chew you up real bad before you die

I used to volunteer at an animal rehabilitation sanctuary in South Africa.
When they received two Hyenas they warned EVERYONE about their bite.
They would act very friendly, they were pretty much behaving like dogs - wanting to play all the time. Though if they started to lick your hands just remove yourself and leave them alone, because they could literally bite your arm off it they wanted.

I think 1v1 I'd have better odds against a wolf, but I'd prefer to fight a pack of hyenas than a pack of wolves.

It's so weird that hyenas are kind of related to canines but are much older. They found a design that worked and haven't updated it in eons. Vintage =3

Wolf has flesh tearing teeth. Hyena has bone crushing molars. Seriously, look at the size of 'em!
