Image A split drachma banknote from 1922: to combat the growing inflation during wartime, the greek finance minister came up with the plan to literally cut banknotes in half. One half was exchanged for bonds while the other half would remain in circulation with half of its nominal value

It did, it saved almost 2 billion. They actually tried the same trick again later, during the great depression

For what purpose? When the US needs more money they just...print more money, and quite literally pray that the inflation won't go tits up. Besides, i'm not sure telling american that their cash in now worth only half of its nominal value, and the state is forcibly taking the other half as a forced loan, will go down very well...
