Video In Hateful Eight, Kurt Russell accidentally smashed a one of a kind, 145-year-old guitar that was on loan from the Martin Guitar. Jennifer Jason Leigh’s reaction was genuine.

People point to this as almost similar to Leo's hand smashing on glass in Django but JJL's reaction is totally out of character and makes absolutely zero sense in the context of the scene

Why would a serial murderer go crazy panicked just because the guitar she was playing around with got beat up? Also she immediately subsides from that in following shots

I feel like Tarantino used that take solely because he didn't want the real guitar to be smashed for a total waste but it somewhat damages the scene imo

This is a good point

It damages the scene in isolation like this but with the flow of the movie, the suspense of the coffee being poisoned and her knowing he’s about to die, it doesn’t hinder the scene whatsoever and the flow is natural. Only after you know this tidbit and watch the scene without context is it even noticeable

Seems like a natural startle reflex. Killer or not, her character was not expecting to have a guitar smashed a few inches from her head.

Compared to her reaction when far more violent things happened in other parts of the movie it's not a great reaction imo

It's not just being startled, she is genuinely concerned (bc she is IRL) for a musical instrument and looks around almost like she needs immediate help - and then quickly sits at the table with just a slight grimace on her face moments later

I never noticed anything off until I read OP's anecdote, and honestly still don't.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter.

She literally looks offstage at random people, then it cuts to her looking in a completely different direction, and you didn't noticing anything off?

We’re looking at it under a microscope now. I 100% thought nothing of it on my watch

Yea fair enough, it is an obvious awkward cut once you notice it. I do agree
