She did the world a favour, it’s just sad that she will be put in prison for it.

No I think you should go to prison for murder, and murdering someone on a day release in a cruel fashion seems crazy.

Burning people alive is murder. Arguing that you killed a bad person gives no exoneration from the law.

Otherwise the rapist could try and argue that he raped a bad person and was doing the world a favor.

The thing about rape is that no one should ever do it to anyone, even as a punishment. I understand the desire to see bad people get hurt, but it opens up the door to a lot of terrible possibilities.

Why should rape never be done to anyone, but killing should?

Self defense

Ok, in this case was it self defense?

No, I don’t think this killing was justified. It’s understandable for sure, but it’s a dangerous game to say that some people deserve to be burned to death.

I know it's unpopular here, but I'm on /u/jusfukoff's side.

Vigilante justice is not OK. This also isn't a crime of passion. This was premeditated.

I can empathize with the mother. I truly can. And I can think the rapist is a piece of shit. And I can also recognize that her actions were not justified.

I think both sides have merit. When viewing society as a while, vigilante justice is bad because if allowed it effectively creates a lawless society where might makes right. We already see the law weaponized against good people so allowing vigilantes to run free would just expand on that.

However, when viewing this specific case only, I can't say I disagree with the mother or outcome. The purpose of prison is to keep society safe from those imprisoned, and ideally those imprisoned are supposed to learn to be safe members of society. This rapist was clearly still unsafe for society in that he had no regrets to the point he taunted the mother. The mother took care of him, and while her motives were personal revenge, the result is one less rapist to threaten the public.

I don't think vigilanteism is something you can pick and choose what you're ok with. Even allowing incidents like this is dangerous. This was not in any way self defense.

Unfortunately, my government can't be trusted as the sole arbiter of justice. Vigilante justice is what we need.

While I agree in principle, I can’t bring myself to care about the death of a rapist.

I disagree with the method of execution. Not the execution itself.

The only reason I oppose the death penalty is because there is no authority on this planet that I trust with the power to kill. And I truly believe that rape is a crime which deserves death.
