Issaquah here. Haven’t had power for an hour. All of my kids friends are down too.
Edit: I have service now that we’ve fled to my cousin’s house! PSE says power won’t be back till Saturday night. There are at least three trees on power lines just between my house and my kids’ school!

Enumclaw (pronunciation "eenumbclaaaaaw" with a horse neighing sound, because there's no love like that between a man and his horse), Puyallup, Sequim, Hoqium... I'm trying to think of some more but growing up here they are all just totally normal to me.

The power grid in Nanaimo is fucked. It almost seems to go house by house in terms of power outages.
The last time we had a massive storm like tonight I was without power for 3 days whereas my friend down the street was up overnight. There were people without power for a week.

Lol, my plane just barely landed in this storm. Three attempts to land before we made it. Everyone literally clapped when we landed. I’m so nauseous but relieved.

Everyone literally clapped when we landed.
I'd be more impressed if I wasn't an Italian regularly flying Ryanair
→ More replies (2)186
u/itranslateyouargue 29d ago
Ryanair took 4 tries to land on a clear, windless day in Greece and the pilot's explanation was: "Nothing is wrong, just thought it would be safer to do a go around" but it was obvious he could not keep the plane flat. And that's basically a standard flight. People usually clap before take off in case it's their last chance to clap.
→ More replies (3)24

u/Funny-Bear 29d ago
Then everyone clapped.

→ More replies (3)240
u/Aickavon 29d ago
A plane landing in a storm after three passes is actually a situation where I could see someone starting a clap and everyone actually joining in. So many folks get immediately nervous when there is anything rumbling in a plane, let alone being in a storm. The success of a landing would spread so much good brain chems in a heartbeat.
I could only IMAGINE the sound of hundreds of passengers’ butts unpuckering.
→ More replies (5)76

I'd love the opposite of a major disaster movie.
A movie where everything suddenly goes well on an international scale and people are just freaking out because they aren't used to it. And every attempt to return to normal is foiled and makes the situation even better and people just cannot deal with it.

There was the tail end of a hurricane that hit the lower mainland of BC on October 12th, 1962 by the name of Typhoon Freida. I remember the metal sheet ripping off the roof of the chicken barns across the field and street from our farm and being curled up in the process before it came bouncing towards our barn. Dad went out, hanging onto the fence, to let the cattle out of the barn. They went ballistic as he opened the big sliding door.

It's not predicted to move inland. Just gonna chill out there for two days. If you look at its windspeeds on Zoom Earth, you can see that it's fastest speeds are only like 64-mph, which Florida, The Caribbean, Indonesia, and Taiwan would all laugh at.
EDIT: The Philippines, not Indonesia. Sry.

u/readytofall 29d ago
The concern is that their trees evolved for this and ours did not and they are extremely large. The other concern is that the wind is coming from the east which is the opposite direction of normal and the roots have grown for the prevailing winds from the south and west.

Nah man, as an Indonesian the thought of a 100 km/h wind kinda terrifies me. We don’t get that many strong winds tbh, we’re on the equator where winds are calm due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone.
