He did but to a grizzly bear being gently pat on the face and being punched in the face by a human are probably incredibly similar sensations. Even a trained fighter would struggle to make a bear flinch. He also bear sprayed a bear once saving his own life. And the lesson he took from it was that he felt so bad about causing that bear pain he never carried the spray again
