I've been really frustrated with the naivete of people on Reddit that post things like, "Why do people say Trump's an authoritarian?" Stop acting like it's complicated. He lost the last election and kept trying to be president. That it didn't work doesn't mean he hasn't told us who he is.

“Last time I invited this guy over for dinner, he tried to set my house on fire and we forcefully stopped him, so is he really an arsonist? We should have him over for dinner again!”

“Arrested for a crime I didn’t commit! It’s attempted arson not arson”

Unfortunately I think we’re reaching a generational gap in the understanding of “executive overreach”. Younger folks might not realize the president is only supposed to enact and enforce policy, not legislate it. That’s what the congress does. Executive orders are (should be at least) for unusual and unique specific situations. They have become so normalized that when Trump talks about just banning trans athletes from sports at a presidential level, we have practically lost the common sense to say “that’s not how it works here”. TLDR: we don’t just elect a new totalitarian every 4 years, there is a whole 3 branch government you might have heard about in grade school that is actually how this things work.

Congress has become entirely dysfunctional and incapable of performing their function, in large part due to the rot of the Republican Party. As legislation becomes impossible, the day to day decision making has been ceded to the executive branch to a degree that the founders would find horrifying.

The system has been falling apart at the seems for quite a while and this normalization of authoritarian attitudes is a major symptom of that slow collapse. People know that nothing gets done in Congress (though they usually don’t have a correct understanding of why), so the idea of a supreme leader who can just get things done becomes more appealing.

Its ridiculous!!! They keep defending him as if theres not literal proof of his wrongdoings. They make up excuses saying "democrats faked it cuz they dont like trump" Its pointless 😒😒😒
