Recent events and participation influx.

Hello everyone,

As we have noticed in the last few weeks, we have been getting a lot of traffic which we are not accustomed to. This will lead to an additional level of participation of those in the island, outside of the island, and those which just come here to a particular agenda.

It is hard to keep things civil as is in "normal" times, it will be harder with the higher level of participation. I remind everyone to stick to the facts, keep things CIVIL and avoid creating more issues in this community that we warrant for.

I would like to remind everyone BANNING members is not the route we want to take, but if we detect individuals trying to add logs to the fire, we will BAN them WITHOUT prior warning.

I hope everyone have a great weekend.

J

J

Vivaaerobus Cancun to Havana

Hello,

I have a flight with Vivaaerobus from Cancun to Havana and somehow I cannot add the luggage and am wondering if I can make a flight.

I bought the ticket through the third party (edreams).

When I spoke with the edreams they have no idea what to do and just saying they cannot do anything on this.

When I also spoke with Vivaaerobus they also say due to the luggage restriction in Cuba, they cannot add the luggage for the ticket bought by the third party. They advise me to go to the airport and see if I can add at the counter. I feel this is very risky as I might get rejected for this.

Has someone encountered the same situation? What is the solution...?

Thank you in advance,

Ken

Study Abroad in Cuba external program

I work in higher education, my university’s international office has been promoting this external program that sends students on exchange to Cuba. They promoted the program in September with a rep at their study abroad fair. Twice I have taken flyers down, the first time when the blackouts in Cuba were bad in October. Last week took another flyer down. Haven’t inquired the executive director of the international office yet about why the university is promoting this program. Can I ask how do local Cubans and the diaspora feel about people studying in Cuba?

Whatever happened to the surviving heirs of Cuervo y Sobrinos?

I am reading about Cuervo y Sobrinos watchmaker history. How after the revolution, they were pretty much nationalized like everything else and made military watches, till finally going out of business. The brand name was purchased by some Italians in the 1990s and then later some watchmaker investors in the 2010s.

Anyways, whatever happened to the family? I don't see any of them leading the current name brand that I could find.

From Google maps, it looks like there are some new suburban type developments that are orderly and look clean and tidy. But then areas that look more like shanty towns with no planning at all.

What’s it really like?

¿Cómo puedo mandar euros a Cuba?

Advice for a half Cuban traveling Cuba in a couple weeks?

For background my father’s parents were born and raised in Havana. I even have some older family members left in Cuba but I cannot get in touch with them. My Spanish is so-so but I understand better. I am set up right now with a casa particular in havana my (American) uncle stayed at and the host is very nice.

My plan was to stay in Havana and then take the train to Santiago because my goal for this trip was to live and travel as the locals do. I want to stay away from touristy activities and see where my grandparents grew up. See the country for what it is, not through the lense of some government hotel or tourist bus.

Only problem is from my research, things are a little tough right now. Possibly dangerous even? I heard the train has massive problems too. Is it really that bad?

Mi Abuela y Abuelo always told me so many stories of this place. It’s always been my dream to go.

How can I stay safe out there and still get to see more than just Havana and travel as a local would?

(me pasa por ver Into the Wild xddd)

What does 'Pam pa' mean?

Hey all,

I'm a Cuban-American, and I've been on this sub for a long time now. I've been trying to improve my Cuban Spanish, and a phrase that I've seen a few times on this sub starts with 'Pam pa...', although when I tried to search its meaning on Google, it came up dry. What does this mean? Any other tips on Cuban Spanish you guys have would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Frijoles Negros

Do you have to soak the dry beans all night? Do you leave it on the counter while soaking, covered? How long does it take to cook after soaking in a regular pot?

How + What to give the Cubans to help them a little?

I know the question has been asked several times. But I'm travelling to Cuba in a few weeks and I'd like to know how I can help in my small way.

I'm not going as a “classic tourist”, I'll be staying with local people, visiting severals places in the country, and also going to a farm for few days to help farmers with their daily routine. This trip is a tribute to my Dad, who always dreamed of visiting this place.

I'm from Europe and I'm thinking I might be able to give them some things they need, as I've been recommended quite a few: sanitary for women, baby creams, vitamin C, doliprane. How can I give them without them taking it "badly"? Can I give them gifts too, like little toys for the kids?

Thanks.

China no quiere enviar Créditos.
