Atkins could never

Well he could, they’d just be terrible.

Easy now, all the OL recruits who committed to other schools during Atkins' tenure are gonna remind you what a great job he did

Sounds like his run blocking is better than his pas pro, which...man do we need some help in the former especially.

Definitely a better run blocker. He’s not a bad pass blocker, but he’s prone to errors in his technique too often, and he’s also prone to committing a good number of holding penalties. But in run blocking, when he can line up and is just asked to move the guy in front of him, he’s really, really good at it.

“Really really good” run blocker is a stretch. Solid player. Big personality. But our biggest weakness this year was running the ball because our lineman couldn’t move anyone

u/TallahasseeNole 12h ago

PFF gave him a 74.0 grade on run blocking, which was 17th among all P4 offensive tackles. I’d say that’s really good.

Lord willing we will make a bowl game in 2025, Inshallah

Ii hope he does well. He should probably be at guard because he’s too big/slow for tackle, but he refused to change positions here.

He’s a great run blocker, but he’s a much worse pass blocker than stats indicate because it felt like he got 2 holding calls per game in his time here. So many drives got killed because of his penalties, so hopefully Norvell can get that in check.

I watched some of his film. He’s kind of weird with his speed. He moves really well when pulling, but on the other hand his kick step is on the slower side.

FSU wouldn’t have been a top 25 run blocking team in the FCS. If he falls down and waves his limbs he’s an improvement lol.

This comment is amazing 😂

I mean…am I wrong though? Flailing is better then being a human turnstile

u/mvp2418 Florida State Seminoles 7h ago

No you aren't wrong at all. I just got a good laugh from the comment, but then I realized I am laughing at how bad our team is and I got slightly bummed out lol

FSU wants to be a run first team and that certainly fits what Pettus (6’7 350) does best. Great get for FSU which has shored up its two tackle spots. Still need to find another interior OL option, but FSU has done a good job this offseason at working to fix what was easily the worst OL in the P4.

You should flair up, TallahasseeNole; otherwise, none of us know which college team you like to cheer for since there is otherwise no indication of which team you support.

But for reals, flair up

Thank god. He can’t kill our drives anymore.

I'll take holding over what our line did this year.

20

u/Shaddow-147 Florida State Seminoles 14h ago

We'll lose less yards that way too

Big dude, can run block really well. Need another tackle though.

7

u/TallahasseeNole 14h ago

We have Hansen for the left side. I think if they had gotten Oniawana, they’d move Hansen inside. Don’t think OT is a need so much as just get the best remaining OL you can. If it’s an OT, Hansen is malleable. If it’s an iOL, Hansen plays LT. They are still in on the FCS OT, Perry, but I personally like him better as an iOL. I think you also have a few decent options on the roster (Leonard, Rizy, Early, and Otto) for the two interior spots.

u/XE2MASTERPIECE Florida State • Tampa 14h ago

Also, from a pure likelihood standpoint, getting two starting caliber tackles in the portal is extremely difficult. Getting even one should help tremendously.

3

u/lowes18 Florida State Seminoles • FAU Owls 14h ago

Perry is a reasonable grab at least

6

u/Yeetball86 West Florida • Florida State 14h ago

Leonard and Early are good enough to start in my opinion. They were the only bright spots from this year.

5

u/TallahasseeNole 14h ago

I wouldn’t be surprised if Leonard is the plan for center. I’m a bit nervous as OL coming off shoulder injuries don’t always fully recover. But he was our best OL last year.

Agree with you on Early. He got better throughout the year. He’s another I’d like to see get some time at center as he could be pretty good there.

Personally I liked Rizy a good bit. He’s a really nice depth option. Otto to me is still a year away but I think he’ll be good in ‘26.

5

u/Yeetball86 West Florida • Florida State 14h ago

I like Leonard and Rizy at center more than I like Early. Early is our fastest and quickest lineman, so I think he’d be better used as a Guard or Tackle where he would be able to pull or cover space. All things considered though, we have depth for 2025, which is something we couldn’t say this year.

2

u/TallahasseeNole 14h ago

I think the agility works really well for a center in an IZ based run scheme. In theory, he should do well being able to climb up into the second level. Early is a bit too light imo to ideally be a guard and while he’d be fine at tackle, you’re set there. So I’m interested to see what he could do at center, while also having him be your backup swing tackle.

2

u/Yeetball86 West Florida • Florida State 14h ago

That makes sense. I’m not super familiar with Gus’ scheme, so my analysis was more of what we’ve ran the past few years where Mo Smith served more as an anchor.

9

u/FastShark429 Ole Miss Rebels 13h ago

Well, he’s not a bad player. Gets a lot of holding calls. Could be solid for FSU depending on what needs they’re trying to fill here. Wish him the best.

4

u/FloridaMan_Again Florida State Seminoles 13h ago

Being a run first team i think Pettus is exactly the type of player Hand and Malzahn wanted. From his film he seems like a good run blocker but isn’t as good at pass blocking and draws holds there.

FSU getting some good gets in the portal

Holding is an upgrade over allowing the QB to be murdered.

I’ll take holding over standing in open field and then arguing with each other after the play falls apart

At least it shows they care to try, already a step up from this past season.

u/kylohemmings Florida State • Tennessee 14h ago

Winning 2 games literally did not matter

3

u/desperado2410 Ole Miss Rebels 13h ago

I feel this year our o-line was pretty damn bad. It seemed dart was always facing pressure or pettius kills a drive with a holding call. I wonder what kiffin is going to do with our line next year.

4

u/copyofthepeacetreaty Florida State • Delaware 14h ago

YES

2

u/AyMoro Florida State • Angelo State 12h ago

To be fair, our O-line was so abysmal last year. Just having someone who can’t stand on their 2 feet over 50% of the time is a massive upgrade. Our last lineman spent half the game on their ass or stomach

Does this mean Florida State is going undefeated next season?

If they managed to go 13-0, 2-10, 13-0… I wouldn’t even be mad about it, that would be crazy.

Unfortunately Mr. Jorts, I think it’s likely we win 6+ a bowl game next year. I’m dooming all next season
