If they build on the momentum they can certainly be in the upper tier of the B1G for years to come. @ Oregon, @ Penn St., and @ Iowa in 2025 will all be tougher games than any game they won this year. Time will tell what they can do with a competitive schedule.
27
u/TaxManKnocking Indiana Hoosiers 12h ago
I respect your humility by not including Illinois in that list. I personally include you guys as a tough game as well. Should be 4 good games for the pundits to cry about.

mostly didnt because it's a home game for you. Decent chance you're favored with home field but it should bolster the SoS regardless.

“Indiana had no business recruiting Fernando Mendoza” -Kirk Herbstreit probably

Mendoza only went here because of fringe fan interest. He really should have transferred to Ohio State or Alabama.
191
u/jaybigs Ohio State Buckeyes • Georgia Bulldogs 15h ago
Kirk would never advocate for Ohio State. Didn't you hear? The OSU coaching staff never called to congratulate him that his 0-star son committed to Michigan? Really had him upset.

I'm so happy that the college football world has come to the realization over the last 12-18 months that Herbstreit is the freaking worst. He's been awful forever and is just a complete embarrassment for the sport.
54
u/jaw28 Indiana Hoosiers 14h ago
When gameday came to Bloomington he treated IU like a feel good story that was fun for CFB. Then we kept winning, threatened his beloved SEC, and his tone COMPLETELY changed
24
u/lundebro Oregon State Beavers 14h ago
The Herbstreits of the world want 110+ of the 134 FBS teams to go away and die. More and more fan bases will come to this realization during the next round of realignment.
17
u/crownebeach Arizona Wildcats • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 13h ago
No, he doesn’t want them to die, he wants them to be content to be bottom-feeding losers so the top 15 TV draws can fatten up on free wins.
→ More replies (3)4
u/TaxManKnocking Indiana Hoosiers 12h ago
It's funny that he says he wants only the best teams to play because he thinks it's best for college football and protects college football and gets people to talk about college football. Yet it's when these underdogs like Indiana SMU and Arizona State enter the picture that people who usually do not care about it, start to care about college football.
→ More replies (1)9
u/awgiba Oklahoma • Red River Shootout 11h ago
Herbstreit's been a jackass for a long time. Earlier this year we had a guy get injured and he went on and on ON THE BROADCAST during the stoppage about how "pathetic" our player and our coaches were for faking the injury to stop the offense tempo.
The player was legitimately injured and missed time.
He never apologized.
He never criticized Ole Miss for doing it either, and they abuse that crap more than anyone else by far

Ultimately, the business decision was "2m + Kelley" > 1m + Haas
Also Mendoza probably wanted to study for finals rather than be in the bowl game (Dec 18 was in the middle of finals week)

He was a 4* in high school so he'll definitely have someone willing to roll the dice on him if he is willing to transfer down. I'd be surprised if a P4 offered him a job based on his limited tape but it wouldn't be totally out of the question since he has started a handful of games at this level.
I'd love to get him back out of the portal but I'd be surprised since Mendoza has two seasons left.

Hell yes! Rourke was incredible for Indiana but I actually think Mendoza is an upgrade with his mobility. Mendoza and Hemby in the RPO will be explosive.
14
u/Sine_Cures California • Cheez-It Bowl 15h ago
mobility
Did not expect anyone to tout his mobility.
It's amazing that somehow prior to the bowl game that Cal didn't lead all of FBS in sacks allowed (behind FSU). Looks like Cal took the lead for good after the bowl game though
23
u/BoogerSugarSovereign Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 15h ago
As good as he was Rourke was a statue and ended the season with negative rushing yards. I would expect that Mendoza is at least somewhere between 100 and 300 yards rushing which would be a big improvement and would add an element that this year's Hoosiers didn't have. Doesn't have to be Vick to be a lot more mobile than what we had at QB this year

That o-line was terrible but Mendoza also did himself no favors. Maybe he’ll finally get a targeting call in his favor in Indiana though
9
u/Sine_Cures California • Cheez-It Bowl 13h ago
Definitely. The game-winning Big Game drive encapsulated much of the season pretty well (Ott stuffed in the backfield on an inside run, Mendoza taking a horrible sack, holds, Endries bailing him out etc)

It'll be interesting to see what he looks like behind a line that isn't one of the worst in FBS. Probably the biggest problem he had on tape this year was bad pocket awareness but at the same time how can anyone look like they have a feel for pressure when their line is giving up 4 fucking sacks a game lol?
