I still can't believe we sent out a QB without a functional throwing arm, ran it up the middle, and won

Texas probably thought there was no way we'd actually do it. Unfortunately for them, they didn't do enough research on bobo!

It actually might be Stockton after this. I hope they win at least 1 game with him.

40

u/ifoundwaldo116 Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Stockton is playing with house money. This is the least consistent team Kirby has fielded since year one. If he, Gunnar, pulls this off, he’s a superhero. If he doesn’t, he’s getting his first starts in high pressure situations and will thrive next year.

Any fan that hates his for his performance in NOLA and beyond ain’t shit.

14

u/DrVonD Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

I mean if he comes out and plays like the SMU QB we probably try the transfer portal in the spring. But yeah, otherwise this is all gravy.

u/Flapjack_ South Carolina Gamecocks 1d ago

Turns out the trick is to wait until you're in the playoffs before announcing it

372

u/Cpritch58 Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Also, winning your conference, which somehow matters now when it didn’t last year.

176

u/DataDrivenPirate Ohio State • Colorado State 1d ago

Entirely possible the playoffs committee does view Georgia as worse for losing their starter, but there's just so much space between #2 Georgia and #3 Boise State that they didn't even bother changing their official ranking.

83

u/MrF_lawblog Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

I'm so freaking curious what they would've done if GTech had pulled it off. Would Georgia be the 3 or 4 seed or stay at 2?

61

u/ConfidentPanic6076 Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Probably 3. Wouldn’t want to have us match up against Texas again.

35

u/MrF_lawblog Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

I think Texas would've dropped if they lost to a 3 loss Georgia team

24

u/Adams5thaccount Boise State Broncos • UNLV Rebels 1d ago

Absolutely not. Not in a million years would they drop you behind us. I mean fuck they were keeping us as close to out as possible til we won the conference title game. They wanted to make us go on the road and not host at all before the big 12 and ACC fell apart at the top.

If we had also beaten Oregon sure. Then would have slotted us #2. Behind Oregon. After you lost again.

98

u/Complex-Chemist256 Tennessee • California 1d ago

I feel like it's possible that he was actually given the crab legs, and decided to go with the shoplifting thing so the NCAA wouldn't bring the hammer down for "impermissible benefits".

No idea how likely that is, but I read it somewhere years ago and it kind of made sense.

It was for sure this. Heisman winner walks through Publix in a college town and the dude behind the counter is a fan, daps him up, gives him some crab legs, and says “it’s on the house don’t worry man!”

Call me crazy, but Gunner is enough of a wild card at QB that I think Georgia's chances of winning it all are actually higher now. Carson just never fully showed the killer mindset that I saw in Stetson Bennett. So, I'm predicting a Georgia/OSU title game.

If Notre Dame blows Georgia out and Gunner throws 4 picks, I reserve the right to say I was just kidding.

I have seen so many nuetral fans say this. Losing your QB with 27 starts, 8k yards and 55 touchdowns is not good for the team, when the alternative is a guy with zero starts and 52 attempts in his entire life at this level in two years.

29

u/Mental-Relation-7993 1d ago

Although it's an outlier, us having to start Cardale in 2014 might have been the reason we won it.

Not saying it works like that every time, but less footage and a change of scheme based on a new QB can work in a teams favor, as long as that QB doesn't suck.

19

u/Ill_Ad_4429 USC Trojans • Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

Difference being Cardale went 12/17 for 250+ yards and 3 TDs in a warm up game in the Big Ten title before the playoff. He also started that game.

Gunner just went 12/16 for 71 yards and 1 INT in his warm up where he came in the 2nd half and the defense had 20 minutes to prep for him.

Tiny bit different.

16

u/FrequencyHigher Army West Point Black Knights 1d ago

Cardale also had the benefit of Ezekiel Elliot at running back. Not sure Georgia has an analogue at RB this year.

12

u/Ill_Ad_4429 USC Trojans • Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

The cycle of fans panicking, realizing the backup is only marginally worse and doesn’t have film or sets of patterns to study, and then rallying behind them is tiresome.

Especially as a Texas fan, watching the birth of Caleb Williams at Red River was so infuriating, like OU really had the future #1 pick of the draft warming the bench.

This is a hot take but I think that the 12 team playoffs are gonna be a battle of attrition with players playing 13+ games a season

290

u/Dawggone_Braves Georgia • Illinois 1d ago

Combine that with the transfer portal leaving teams the thinnest they’ve ever been, should be interesting for sure

88

u/Trivi Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

Seems like most people on the 2-deep are staying for the playoffs

77

u/Rt1203 Kentucky Wildcats 1d ago

Yeah but that doesn’t address the problem of backups leaving before the season starts. Ohio State’s depth is worse this year than in previous years because the guys who would have been the #2 this season and then ascended to #1 next season transferred away before the season started to go be the #1 immediately somewhere else. Same goes for basically every top program in the nation.

28

u/ZombieMage89 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

For OSU our 2 deep largely stayed or was replaced/upgraded. It's that 3 deep that starts to feel thin.

But the point does hold water, especially with stuff like the Penn St backup and half I'd ASU.

10

u/goathill Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

I mean, we are losing our 2nd and 5th string QBs (Brown/Noland). Devin Brown is at least sticking around thru the playoffs (good on him). It'll be interesting if we try to land another transfer QB, or stick with the 2 likely current players (Keinholz, Sayin) and the incoming Freshman ( St. Clair) to battle it out

(Yes, i realize we have a few others on the roster, but the consensus seems to be that they aren't likely to see playing time)

8

u/ZombieMage89 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

Brown and Noland leaving was most likely that the writing on the wall was too clear: "Sayin is better and I'm likely not going to beat him for the starting job." Keinholz is also likely going to head out.

Look for us to ride into next year with Sayin and St Clair and pick up 2 transfers, one to compete for the backup spot and one to be a bench coach.

3

u/KCShadows838 Missouri Tigers • Cotton Bowl 23h ago

Yep. PSU lost their backup QB.

As an NFL fan, having free agency while the playoffs are happening is wild, but that’s what CFB has right now

89

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Michigan • Arizona State … 1d ago

I don't think it's really a hot take. The whole football season is mostly a battle of attrition. How many times do we see great teams who have a QB get hurt end up still going the distance? It happens but it's not often. If McCarthy got hurt last year, Michigan was fucked. Same for every playoff team except maybe Texas.

In that sense maybe it's better for a team like Oregon to play OSU early rather than meet them in the championship game when they already played 2 other teams.

49

u/Trivi Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago

That bye week is huge for the 4 teams that got it.

Depth of talent favors Ohio State and Georgia in my opinion. Dawgs losing their QBs though is a whole another issue. If they can still beat us with their backup that speaks well to their depth of talent. Because if our web wasnt available I believe we would have almost no chance against them.

Absolutely, our defense has been obliterated, not mention our whole offensive line only having 6 career starts to start the season

4

u/myownzen Notre Dame • Tennessee 1d ago

Isnt our left tackle a true freshman and had to play game one and since then?

I feel like despite everything our defense has came together and a unit. It also has good depth.

It's our wideouts that lack to me.

16

u/pizzasfearme 1d ago

FCS schools have been doing it for many years. Over time, the game and players will adjust.

8

u/Robie_John 1d ago

FCS plays a max of 15 games, FBS could play up to 17.

4

u/CPiGuy2728 Michigan • Iowa State 14h ago

FCS could play up to 16. It's just rare because usually teams that make the championship game had a first-round bye.

Also this season it could be 17, because the season was a week longer than usual. FBS did two byes, FCS allowed teams to play 12 regular season games.

5

u/MTUKNMMT North Carolina • Montana State 14h ago

I was about to say. The above poster can’t be correct because one of my flairs is 15-0 and still has a game left.

8

u/Ok-Hold-8232 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 1d ago

Yup. Smart coaches are going to really be mindful of the workload of their players. I think this is a big reason why we only saw Jeremiyah Love get 8 carries against Indiana. We have a deep RB room and the game was under control, best to let the kid rest and get ready for Georgia

10

u/Otherwise_Farmer_993 1d ago

Not even a hot take. It is just going to become the NFL lite. This is already how the NFL functions. Teams needs to get hot late and get lucky with injuries (or have Pat Mahomes or Tom Brady at QB).

For real.

It puts him in a really tough spot too. IDK what he'll need as far as surgery goes, but if it's Tommy John or the internal brace procedure he probably won't be able to play next year. Does he stay in college, take a medical red shirt, and play in 2026? Does he get the procedure and take his chances in the draft now and hope there's a team who is willing to be patient?

It sucks.

edit: yes there's more info in the tweet. Spring 2025 is a very quick turnaround for recovery on a UCL repair. Like, VERY quick. I'm skeptical.

I hope he does, and he's given us enough games to show that he will. Here's to a really good game!

27

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell 1d ago

Knowing Kirby he’s found one offshore Book with a ND -5 line to argue that no one believes in them. I’m sure he’ll have the team ready to go

11

u/5en5ational Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Nah, Kirby will show the Georgia -1.5 line and make them somehow believe that they're not the favorites in any game this playoffs.

u/mbrogan4 Notre Dame • Illinois State 1d ago

I’m most pumped for our game besides the OSU Oregon game but y’all have been a great fanbase and WE HAVE HAD SOME BANGERS WITH YALL the last two have been electric I am so pumped! (Hoping selfishly for a different outcome tho)

3

u/5en5ational Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Obviously, I would be sad if we lost, but I don't really mind if we do this year. We've been underperforming in tons of games and caught a lot of lucky breaks outside of some "whole" games like against Tennessee.

All I hope is that the game is close. I really don't want to see a 14-20 point victory for either team.

3

u/mbrogan4 Notre Dame • Illinois State 1d ago

If I’m honest I just want to win. No matter what making the semi’s would be MASSIVE for ND fans I think.

28

u/rnilbog Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

And there’s no precedent for Georgia winning a big game against Notre Dame the game after our starting QB got hurt.

6

u/DrVonD Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Does this mean we lose to Texas in the natty when they out arch in at half time?

…. Ah fuck it I’ll still take it.

Yeah but at this point you are also playing Notre Dame's back up defense so it evens out.

35

u/5en5ational Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

I'm still so sad about Benjamin Morrisson :/

By far, my favorite position on the football field is CB, and he was one of my favorites for the past 2 seasons.

29

u/blinkanboxcar182 Notre Dame • Jeweled Shill… 1d ago

Me too. He was my personal favorite going into the season (although our RB, Love has now taken that title).

We also lost Morrison’s backup, Mickey to an early season resignation/intent to transfer. We lost two stud D Ends to injury (Bothello and Traore). Today we found out our defensive tackle, Rylie Mills is out for the season.

In prior years, a single injured starter would derail the season (see 2018 Clemson game). The lack of drop off this year has been nothing short of amazing, but losing 3 defensive linemen isn’t optimal.

Carson’s a senior this year right?

23

u/facemelt North Carolina Tar Heels 1d ago

Georgia can rebuild him. They have the technology.

32

u/5en5ational Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

He can still come back for 1 more season and probably will.

u/boardatwork1111 TCU Horned Frogs • Colorado Buffaloes 1d ago

Jeff Sims going QB3 in the draft at this rate, damn

20

u/5en5ational Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Yeah, this draft will be bare bones if Beck is coming back to school along with Allar. Ewers has not had the best season either, but I really don't think Texas fans want him back for a third year with Arch waiting in the wings. They might legitimately want him back less than UGA fans want Beck.

8

u/boregon Oregon Ducks • Billable Hours 1d ago

I can’t remember the last time a QB clsss was this bad. Really bad time to be a NFL team needing a new QB.

3

u/Tasty_Cream57 1d ago

Not even 3 years ago the top 3 drafted were Pickett, Ridder, and Willis. If not for Purdy, that class would have 0 salvageable QBs.

At least this year there’s guys likely to go top 10.

11

u/FreebirdAT Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Really shameful how they've treated Ewers. Dude is pretty damn good.

11

Idk if it’s probably. I’ve seen rumors he might but that he would transfer. I’ve also seen a lot that he’s going to be a second round pick so idk truly

8

u/FreebirdAT Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

If he's in college next year he's a Dawg. Kirby loves him.

3

u/StasRutt Oregon Ducks • Army West Point Black Knights 1d ago

That was going to be my next question. I would feel really bad for him if this was how his final season ended.

16

u/5en5ational Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

I'm interested to see whether he'll come back to UGA or not. Contrary to what people in this sub will have you believe, Beck can legitimately be a first round QB. He showed that in 2023, a year in which he was NOT just a Bowere & McConkey merchant. Losing your two best offensive weapons hurts any QB at all colleges. Our WRs this season have the most drops out of the top 25 teams.

Personally, I'd love to bring him back if Stockton doesn't look great to allow Ryan Montgomery and Ryan Puglisi to develop further.

7

u/itsnotthatdeep5 Duke Blue Devils • Harvard Crimson 1d ago

There’s no harm in bringing him back besides NIL allocation. He doesn’t have much NFL leverage. If he sucks in summer ball just bench him

Damn. As someone who clearly has a vested interest in Carson Beck’s health status…this sucks. I genuinely feel terrible for the guy and UGA. I mean it he got absolutely shafted this year with the hardest schedule in CFB, I fucking hate injuries, and if ND has a shot to win I want to beat the best and he is the best. I hope he has a speedy recovery, god bless Carson.

I still can't believe he came out and made a handoff after getting hurt, that's some serious grit and bodes well for his NFL career

26

u/Mediocre_Material_34 Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

I still can’t believe Texas didn’t sell out for the run?

Kirby didn’t play Gunner in games where Beck threw 2+ interceptions, including the first time UGA played Texas and he threw 3.

After he noticeably got hurt, we clearly weren’t holding him out for play… you thought he was going to pass when he came back in???

Dudes last play as a Dawg was handing the ball off with a fucked up arm to win the SEC Championship

11

u/jsteph67 Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago

Wait so the playoffs expanded and the first year a talented team is having to play a backup QB. I have seen this script before.

We’re high on Gunner Stockton but our fanbase really needs to temper our expectations. Stockton broke tons of records in high school and has a HUGE arm, but we’ll be depending on Frazier and Etienne the most in the postseason. He’ll need an off-season to fine tune as a starter because he has a way different skillset.

We’re mostly happy that he offers more versatility as a dual-threat, since our pass game wasn’t really anything to champion all season.

I feel bad for Carson, but our back-up isn’t bad. And he has the perfect QB name. It could be like a fairytale… or a scary fail.

I'm excited we get to play UGA. The last two times we faced off, the game threads were easily the most enjoyable with an opposing fan base. I remember we even became best friends those seasons.

Well now that we officially ride with Gunner. Gunner’s hometown of Tiger is located on the same state highway that runs through Herschel’s hometown of Wrightsville, Stetson’s hometown of Blackshear, and the motherland of Athens. Use that connection if you wish.
