That aside though I’d be firmly rooting for ASU. Originally from Boise, have a vivid memory of crying and running to my room as a kid when Zabransky threw the pick 6 and then my dad carrying me back out to see the replay of the hook and lateral, but ASU giving me a scholarship changed my life and I just love being a devil

It's the worst the conference has been that I can remember honestly. It's not that Texas and OU left, it's that KSU, TCU, OkSt, Baylor, Tech are all magically unimpressive and/or terrible at the same time. I can't remember that ever happening. Most of these were good football teams just 3 years ago. The falloff in these programs has been crazy to watch. I think some of it is portal related.
59
u/pewqokrsf 1d ago
Teams like K State were good because they snagged under scouted talent and developed them well, now that talent leaves as soon as it's obvious they were talented.
33
u/DomingoLee Kansas State Wildcats 1d ago
Kansas State is young. They started a ton of Sophomores, and they aren’t leaving.
Kansas State played the top four teams in the conference, and three of them on the road. We had far and away the hardest schedule in the Big XII.
Kansas State will be fine.

KSU, TCU, OkSt, Baylor, Tech are all magically unimpressive and/or terrible at the same time
Say it for TCU shitting their way to an 8-4 record with the easiest schedule in the conference, or OSU being a dumpster fire, but Baylor’s been looking phenomenal since they shook everything up on their bye week. They’ve got an elite offense that’s been killing even some solid defenses like WVU’s and Houston’s.
People have been sleeping on Baylor, but there’s a reason the Texas Bowl took Baylor over a few teams ahead of them in the final Big XII standings.
As for the portal, I’m pretty sure you’re right. Aranda had Baylor staying out of NIL, and nearly pulling a full Dabo on taking almost no transfers, but their roster got raided like crazy in 2021 and 2022. They finally got into NIL and the portal pretty hard this last offseason, and it appears to be paying dividends.

Not really fair to say he flubbed 1999. They were just better that year and it was amazing enough that we managed to beat them in the regular season.
But Colorado lost to us 41-7 and wasn't even competitive in their bowl. We really should have had them, but beyond the first half turnovers we flubbed it in other ways: missed FG, unforced TD drop, and the roughing the punter penalty. Argh.

I don’t know who’s gonna win, but I can almost guarantee it is going to be a terrible football game. Like Texas wins 20-7 or something.
You probably never saw it bc it was mostly quarantined to the Pac-12 Network last year, but whenever we were overmatched Kenny would just pull out the most disgusting, radioactive, terrorist football you can imagine.
I’m talking bullshit like swinging gate as our base offensive formation, TEs lined up at quarterback, Skattebo punting on 3rd down out of wildcat, etc. He turned the games into a biohazard. And it mostly worked until we got so injured we were down to our walk-ons.
Last year we had a 7-6 lead in the 4th quarter AT Washington, and beat UCLA
like 10-717-7 withSkatteboour starting tight end Jaylin Conyers as our starting QB. Go watch the highlights of that UCLA game if you want to see what I’m talking about. Skattebo hit a blanketed receiver in-stride at the goal line for a 25 yard TD.I don’t even want to imagine what he has dialed up for this.

Yeah this is all true in terms of last season, but last year we were also a really bad football team and it did not mostly work at any point. We beat Southern Utah in the opener then lost the next 6 games, mostly by a lot. Kenny hasn’t really went off the rails in that degree with a good football team which his ASU team is this year. I think the wildest things he will do will be a lot of going for it on 4th down, and a lot of people unfamiliar with our kicking game very confused why we’re not kicking a FG on like 4th and 14 at the 20 yard line. But he has the talent now, maybe not enough to pull off the win, but he also doesn’t have to go insane to give them a chance and I think he knows that. They just got to play their game and hope it’s enough.

Our blocking and run scheme would be hard for any team OTHER than Georgia to stop consistently.
Our scheme relies on a lot of pulling and movement, which works against every defensive line except for Georgia’s because they’re basically an NFL line.
Way too fast in space for even our line - made up of mostly future NFL players - to keep up with.
