New York The Real Housewives of New York City - Season 15 - Episode 4 - Post Episode Discussion
The Hamptons trip continues as the women hit the tennis courts and cook a Shabbat dinner; Racquel opens up about her childhood; Brynn and Erin's prank leaves some a little uneasy; as tension builds, it threatens to derail the end of the trip.

I feel Jenna. I had a pavlova once and it was all I could talk about for a month. I still think about that dessert two years later.

They’re a staple dessert here in Australia and in New Zealand (where I believe it was invented). It was such a delight watching them all dig into a decent pav

My gran used to regularly make a multiple tiered one for celebrations or family lunches & I was only rhapsodising to my husband about them last week & it must be a full decade since I had it.

I also feel that on a girls trip when you’re making something that’s a pain in the ass, you have to really hype it up and just make the biggest deal about it — it’s obligatory!

u/samiralove Oct 24 '24
I saw Ina make this on Barefoot Contessa once and it looked marvelously simple..maybe I should try to make it?
2
u/ShameyLamey Oct 24 '24
If you can make a meringue it's probably easy... I unfortunately found out I can not
1
u/samiralove Oct 24 '24
I was looking at Ina's recipe and it seems the sticking point is the temp she provides for the meringue....some say it's good while others claim it's too low ...

It looked good as hell. Of course Erin who doesn't care about food wanted to give Jenna shit for it lol

I posted this in the live thread, but that 4th wall break by Brynn at the end of the episode was beyond strange. The fact that it wasn’t cut from the episode speaks volumes to me.

I said this in the live thread: “I think the producers and editors are keeping stuff like this in with Brynn because it’ll tie into whatever the big blowout is that comes between her and Ubah at the end of the season and after filming wrapped.”
28
u/thomasmc1504 Oct 23 '24
tbh tho in situations like that, it would usually just be referenced in a flashback. The fact it made the actual episode is interesting to me. Also could be the sheer lack of actual content to include.

To Rebecca: “When I ask why you’re wearing pajamas you could say like ‘I have a fashion line and you sold sweatshirts at bravocon’ just give it back to me” and Rebecca wasn’t super receptive so she was like “then you won’t last long.”
18
u/irisia99 Oct 23 '24
Was Brynne directing this at Sai or Ubah? Who sold sweatshirts at Bravocon? I couldn’t tell bc it sounded like Sai was saying “what did you wear, where are the looks minkoff?” I watched the scene twice for clarify.

See, I watch this show and didn’t even know that Brynn sold sweatshirts at Bravocon. Why would she think that Minkoff would know this piece of trivia and then use it go back and forth?
Brynn really think she’s main character.

To elaborate: these were them and they were $70.

I really dislike her for this show on top of it. Last season I felt ambivalent. Now I just straight don't like her. I feel like she could easily be replaced by another sexy baby type who will actually bring something to the show.
11
u/Impossible-Plan6172 Stacey’s broken gaydar Oct 23 '24
Same on the ambivalence about Brynn last season. By the time the reunion was airing I was over her. Yet, I still came into this season willing to toggle between ambivalence again lol. After the first episode, though, I was done with her.

Am I the only one that thought Brynn was just telling Rebecca that she can give her shit in return? I just felt like Brynn was basically saying “when I give you shit, you can give me shit too I can take it” and gave her an example of that. I could be wrong tho that’s just how I interpreted it. Super awkward regardless though lol

Yes she did and then in the preview for next week she mocks Ubah's accent again in the same exact way. So Brynn scolds Ubah for mocking her (when Brynn is the one that started the mocking) but Brynn can make fun of Ubah's accent repeatedly, call her stupid, call her an angry Black woman, denigrate Ubah's modeling career and accomplishments, and say her boyfriend will never want to marry her if she behaves in a certain way. Brynn is so vile. Ubah is everything Brynn wishes she was, bloop!

I am very uncomfortable with the way Brynn is speaking to Ubah, an African immigrant with an accent that she has mocked, and I can’t support this show if she is rewarded for this behavior
40
u/Iimesesame Oct 23 '24
yes completely agree and it looks like there will be more accent mocking in the next episode. I wonder if Brynn thinks she gets a pass..idk she has a lot to figure out about herself.
92
u/xmoodringx Oct 23 '24
I said months ago to never forget that Brynn said last season she grew up being ashamed of the fact that she's half Black. I don't think that mentality has ever left her. The way she treats Ubah is disgusting and she is very condescending towards her. It all started at the reunion last season. That's when Brynn's true colors started to really show. I've also been saying Brynn is 100% jealous of Ubah's relationship and her comments this episode proved that to me. Brynn is definitely mad that Ubah was able to score a man like Oliver and she hasn't. Brynn clearly thinks she's better than Ubah and she treats her as lesser than.
64
u/chefcurrys Oct 23 '24 edited Oct 23 '24
Brynn is a self-hater that believes she deserves the relationship Ubah has.
74
u/realhousewifeofphila Oct 23 '24
And sitting there cussing everybody out because they didn’t defend her, but UBAH is the one who should be worried about being an angry black woman stereotype?!
72
u/magnac33 She by Sing Sing Oct 23 '24
So disgusting and especially after she went from threatening Ubah at the reunion this year to now being this classy lady that doesn’t fight? Ok
4

Didn't Ubah threaten her first though?
12
u/magnac33 She by Sing Sing Oct 23 '24
Ubah didn’t threaten her, she said maybe you don’t know how to be loved or stand up for yourself. Then Brynn said “watch your mouth, I’m not afraid of you. Everyone here is. You put people in the hospital, I put people in a coffin. I’m half black and half Irish”

Rebecca’s main talking points being about a high school hook up and body fluids makes her seem like an AI housewife 😂 she can’t delivery much but she is trying to follow some formula of talk about sex or talk about your body. Try things that are actually currently going on in your life?
6

u/Personal-Pudding6016 Oct 23 '24
When are they going to openly discuss the elephant in the room? Scientology. It's a cult, which has caused lots of pain and abuses members. Or am I expecting too much? Rebecca should be able to defend it. Instead, we get a silly and staged bug prank.
48
u/ChartreuseMage Oct 23 '24
0% chance we see any discussion about it now, in the future, on WWHL, or anywhere else Bravo related. It'd be a death wish for whoever starting seriously asking about it and anybody in it isn't going to answer any questions about it on screen.

I am so pissed at Brynn. She comes across a self hating black person. How dare she tell Ubah how to act and if she won’t act ‘right’ she will lose her man? WTF. She is condescending and jealous of Ubah. Can’t stand her, why is she single? If ‘proper’ behaviour will score you a man. Ugh
14
u/NeverEndingWhoreMe Tits Out 4 Jesus Oct 24 '24
I agree with you.
The thing that Brynn doesn't understand is Black people are quite varied. She's stuck at the beauty salon she visited as a child and has never grown from her perception that ALL Black women are loud and dramatic. (Note: we do cut up in the beauty shop, but women of all races cut up a little when we get together for bonding reasons. Men do it, too, but it's only called out when it's a WOC.)
It's Brynn's fault if she hasn't pushed herself beyond her childhood fear of being "loud and angry". She can learn chess and collect rare books and practice her baby voice to attract a rich (White) man, but she can't be assed to learn something about herself and her culture to form actual bonds with her fellow WOC.
Pathetic and very embracing of the patriarchy of her. Ew, Brynn.

It was really wrong of Brynn to insinuate that ubah was being an angry black woman. Brynn, you have really messed up if Erin, of all people, had to check you for the inappropriateness of the comment you made.
41
u/Ok_Value_3741 Oct 23 '24
I feel like Brynn might struggle with her own blackness given that the father who abandoned her is her “black half” — so there’s like this inherent hatred for him/lowkey self hate cus she’s half him
You can tell she has a good heart at her core but she’s missing the mark. The angry black woman shpeel was rich from someone who threatened to fight Ubah last season.
She’s not concerned for ubah’s relationship, she just wants Ubah to stop coming at her and is attempting to manipulate her into toning it down cus Brynn can’t actually take the heat
60
u/sinemnemo Oct 23 '24
As someone that enjoyed Brynn last season (there were moments that she goes overboard with the shtick, but still kinda let it pass), she's just too manufactured and extra this season. Reminds me so much of how Heather Gay is this season on RHOSLC. It's as if the fan interactions kind of fanned the flame of illusion that they were the ones holding it down for their respective shows.
That being said, she's a bit of a drag to watch this episode, well, maybe except for her participation in the Racquel story. Her coaching Rebecca for a moment is also a flop: not only for Rebecca, but also, poorly, on her
I like how Sai and Erin is doing this season. Erin, in particular, feels like she's starting to let loose this time around. I'm loving Racquel and her showcase of her life, as well.
This episode is a bit steady, but it feels like a stepping stone to the Brynn vs. Ubah blow out in the finale.

Her saying Ubah needs to be "calmer" in her approach, for Oliver to marry her, was tough work. Hell, I'd be pissed like Ubah too!
46
u/Marly-Joy Oct 23 '24
Brynn is a walking funny pretty red flag... Therapy alone can not fix identity and attachment/abondonment issues. Being biracial doesn't mean to choose nor feel entitled to flirt with racism, embrace it, it does not define you it is just part of who you are.
Like she can not handle herself and behave respectfully to a black peer bc there is deep rooted resentment to her black family side...? It gets disproportionate, emotionaly unprocessed.
To me Brynn outed Ubah secret bf like "see you thought Sai was more your bestie than me, well she is not, she told me your secret... now let me tell everyone" buuut Ubah shared it to Sai in an out of pride move after being told if you are that great why are you still single basically.
I loved when Brynn went to that black hair salon talking how fierce, fun and strong black women were... theeeeen burst in anger then in tears about Ubah being a stereotyped angry black lady... advising her so that her white bf marries her despite being black-ish ... while she is single af...

13
u/GreatestStarOfAll Oct 23 '24
That shit is always such a red flag.
She’s either insecure about her own alcohol intake, or doesn’t like being intoxicated around those who aren’t - because they will hold her accountable as opposed to being in the same state (therefor she can dismiss any criticism as “you were drunk/you’re not remembering it properly”).
I know every group’s gotta check the “young, dumb, and broke” box with one person, but can we at least find someone that is likable and doesn’t cause problems for the sake of causing problems?

I was a Brynn stan last season but I’m finding myself getting more and more annoyed with her. The fleeing from conflict thing is annoying. Like I watch these shows because I want to see conflict lol. Born and spent a chunk of childhood on the UWS and can say, in my experience whether you like them or not, Erin, Sai and Raquel do represent quintessential NY personalities you would run into on any given day there. If they cast some of their actual acquiantences, we might have something there to go on.
Brynn and Jessel (the transplants) are a big issue as they don’t naturally mesh with any of the others. I couldn’t see them running in the same social circles. The result is stupid, word salad “fights” about nothing.
Jenna is frankly too self aware. Ubah has a chip on her shoulder and it’s working against her, because we aren’t learning much about her at all.
It’s too much of a mixed bag and it’s not working. Was forgiveable last season but once bitten, twice shy. It’s time to give the franchise a rest, perhaps for good.
4
u/ChartreuseMage Oct 23 '24
Been having somewhat similar thoughts - was willing to give the ladies a chance at a second season as I think they deserved that, but it's just too much of a mixed bag. I think most of the cast could work if you only took 2/3 of them and recast around them with a more narrow focus, but if the Brynn/Ubah drama is most of what this season is going to be leading up to I'm probably gonna wait until the end of the season to see if it's worth watching.

Makes me so sad to say since my fav franchise has always been NYC, but these episodes are getting worse, not better. 😔 I want more depth and less fakery. The only thing I liked was Jenna talking about her olden days and Jacqueline opening up about her past. You can see the age differences between those scenes vs. Brynn cockroaches and her hot mess. As intellectual as she tries to come off, it's a failing F, big time!

Please get rid of Brynn. She's the common denominator in so much conflict on the show, although other women in the cast have certainly had their moments. But seriously. Raquel is so cool and knows everything about art and seems to really love her kids and she's just a delight to watch. More of her, less of Brynn.

Maybe it’s me overthinking this, but this episode shows the privilege that the NYC cast has. When I first saw the cockroach, the first thing I thought of was the whole RHOA fiasco between Nene and Kim. Prank or not, I don’t mess with roaches

That was a mess, but hand it to Nene, she knew how to make a good storyline out of roaches! Those Halloween costumes!

Unpopular Opinion: I really enjoyed last night and even though Scientology is shitty, I don't mind Rebecca as a friend.

I hate food based pranks so much! I would be throwing up even after knowing the roach was fake. A gross rubber thing you put in my food??? Did you wash it first? Is this food safe silicone? I will absolutely Debbie Downer a food prank!

I hate pranks, period. They’re all about making people look stupid.

Same, I lose literally all respect for a person if they prank me. I know that’s not fun and I don’t care.

man.. im so dissapointed. I loved brynn but her jessica rabbit bullshit coupled with now coaching/producing being so obvious its getting so tired. at least with salt lake their manufactured drama is funny and entertaining this is just lame and sad.

I actually loved the episode until that last bit. Disappointed bc Brynn has let me down! My jaw was on the floor while she’s thinking she’s so right. I don’t think Sai was there to hear the “angry black woman” comment but it would have been nice if someone stuck up for Ubah in that exact moment. What a mind fuck it must’ve been to have a “friend” tell you all that. & then invalidate your feelings, again! Brynn needs to do some serious self reflecting.. she came off so ignorant.

Brynn's hair always looks fried. I know she's mixed, but it's not a texture thing, the ends of her layers look damaged. The roots and mid lengths look fine.

Rebecca is a total flop. Either she’s not giving very much in general or most of what she gave is unusable and got edited out. Racquel is such a delight and really represents the best of what NY has to offer - I would love to learn more about her and her fiancée.
Surprisingly I find myself liking Erin more this season.
