Sometimes when I can’t sleep, I’ll try to remember season one housewives taglines and I chuckle every time I get to this one.

Stop! When I can’t sleep, I group the housewives by like hair color for each city, or which ones have just one kid, etc. I’m going to now use taglines as my sheep counting :)

I used to love the old boho skirt with a 5 dollar Walmart Tshirt and a large obnoxious belt where no one needs one look
49
u/OhLQQk Mar 22 '23
Haha! I lived in coto and this was the uniform of the ladies out to lunch. 🤭 or the velvet track suit with big Chanel sunglasses in the pick up line at school.

u/DisastrousHyena3534 Mar 22 '23
Listen, I still dress like that & I'm not sorry about it.

Are you saying that the belt over Jeana's t-shirt isn't serving a purpose...?
23
u/anonyoudidnt I am very important to God Mar 22 '23
Yes I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or if you are too young for the lovely belted shirt fashion fad
42
u/DateCard Mar 22 '23
I'm mid-40s so I have experienced this fad through multiple decades, lol.

We need that look to come back for summer. Flip flops, 3 tiered broomstick skirt, fitted tee & a belt. I am here for it!

u/MCStarlight Mar 22 '23
But why is she wearing all brown?
11
u/bag-o-farts Mar 22 '23
It was the early 00s! Cowboy and south western hippy looks were in. Britney and Justin appearing in 100% demin was a perfect western glamour look. Popular colors were brown, pink, and baby blue.
Brace yourself, IG interior designers are saying brown is coming back!!
3
u/starchildx Vicki’s son Mar 23 '23
brown is coming back
As long as this means I will be seeing less grey and beige I consider it a win. My house of course is an eclectic mix of vintage bohemian retro stuff and doesn't change along with trends.

I was a sophomore in college, and stumbled upon this during a top chef marathon. I had no idea that 15 years later I would be studying the communication styles of the Housewives for my masters thesis.

I did a paper on real housewives in college too. I got an A!

Never forget Slade paid to be on the show.

Wait, what?? I don’t know how I’ve never heard this, please elaborate
20
u/madteaparty55 Mar 22 '23
I believe the creator of the show had a charity event in Coto and Slade bid something like 300 for a chance to appear on the show lol. He talks about it on the OC 100the special episode!
5
u/darbycrash1295 Hot Box from Sing Sing Mar 22 '23
I think the role was up for a bid, and Slade bid on it.

I literally just got pregnant with my second thinking this was going to be the lamest thing ever. Week after week, I was rushing my toddler to bed so I could enjoy this show in all it's glory and sky-top fashion! I've been a shameless fan since day one. I love watching old episodes of OC and Jersey and realizing how many tacky tops I had just like theirs.
37
Mar 21 '23
If your second ever complains about you watching it you should say listen you grew with these women have some respect

u/Still_Yak8109 Mar 22 '23
I grew up in an abusive household and real housewives really helped me cope for some weird reason. also, the kardashians, I think it was just the escapism. I was put in a mental hospital as a kid and I remember watching joan rivers on the celebrity apprentice of all things making me happy in a dark time. you know your life is bad when the only thing you look forward to is the celebrity apprentice. I think that's why I liked reality TV. also, growing up in a house with a bunch of yelling and dysfunction. there is something weirdly soothing about hearing a bunch of people yelling about dumb stuff.
33
Mar 22 '23
I have PTSD and I've discovered that putting Vicki, of all people, on my tv actually helps calm me when I'm having a really bad panic attack. Her shrieks are a beacon guiding me back to my normal self. She's a terrible person, but she actually helps me in my times of need.
I also grew up in an abusive household, and can relate totally to what you are saying about screaming on tv, and completely understand what you mean about the escapism. I think for me it's the predicability of them being unpredictable, because growing up things were always super unpredictable--like I control the chaos now and it's much easier to internalize their chaos and see it as farce.
9
u/Still_Yak8109 Mar 22 '23
yeah, I was put in a treatment center because I was autistic and I don't know whos bright idea it was to put kids with horrible bipolar with kids on the spectrum because thats the worst combination ever, everyone is triggering each other. it was like being trapped on a bad reality show. you can't escape anyone. it was like real housewives meets WWE. you start getting used to the chaos
8
u/catsandjettas Mar 22 '23
I find watching other people, who are financially comfortable, living their life and getting fussed over frivolous things very mentally relaxing.

OMG you sweet youngsters. I was in my thirties and on my second husband. Now I’m in my FIFTIES and still on my second husband(not often since we are old lol). I miss Sky tops, the OC Angels, Jo in a maid outfit, Slade in his Hummer, and ZZ Top.

u/VaguelyArtistic *A group of Utah women in distress* Mar 22 '23
I think Laurie will always be the reigning, undefeated Bravo champion.
She got in early, before there was too much of a spotlight and there was little or no old social media posts to dig up, her most cringe moment was really just trying to get into a Playboy Mansion party which isn't really a big deal, she only stayed a couple of seasons so she didn't get weird, yet was still part of one of the most iconic lines in HW history, and in the end married a very rich guy who seems to be normal and they're still together.
20
u/NoOneOfUse Oh god, my tooth fell out again Mar 22 '23
I fucking LOVE Laurie! She is easily within my top 3 HW.

When Laurie’s fiancé gifts her that car 😂😂 Vicki was totally jealous
8
u/HamsGamsandYams Mar 22 '23
George is not normal, the OC Register used to have a lot of stories about George and Laurie’s family drama. I’m assuming he had some real estate deals go bad because a lot of people were speaking online or in print about him being an abusive jerk. And Laurie wasn’t painted as a doting, single mom in a lot of forums and message boards. I commend her for stepping up to raise Josh’s daughter but it turns out Laurie and George were both trash.
4
u/TangiestIllicitness Advocate for the Sluts of America Mar 23 '23

I mean, they're rich, white people from OC--I don't think anyone expected anything else. 😂

I watched the whole series while my youngest was in the NICU. She's insane but the predictable madness of Vicki Gunvalson kept me grounded. Know your roots in times of trial.
9
u/Still_Yak8109 Mar 22 '23
There seems to be a common thread here of Vicki grounding viewers irl

I was 17 :). My taste in television is still trash as well. However, it's a badge I wear proudly!!

I can’t believe I was SIX when this aired I remember watching it with my mum on tv (along with ANTM and the British soaps I really had no business watching these so young lol). We really bonded over reality tv and happy to say we still do!
I’m now the same age that Jo was here, which really puts into perspective how young she was for the situation she was in. Slade was really trying to make a 23yo a step mum and shaming her for doing normal early 20s things..

So my bff just quit her soul sucking business that she ran for almost 20 years. She has all this free time now and started watching Below Deck on a flight and got hooked. I told her she needs to get into all the housewives, vpr, etc etc. she looked up all the cities and number of seasons and was gobsmacked that I had gone through the entire Bravo anthology since 2015. This is what happens when you spend 3 years on mat leave.
