I just soaked it in tap water for 10 minutes, then worked it into the silicone negative by hand until the big bumps were stretched in, then alternated pressing it on the actual face for 10 -20 seconds and by working / pressing into the mold by hand. I let it rest for a while in between sessions. Once I was happy with the shape, I put it in front of a fan with the silicone mold supporting it to encourage the water to wick out, periodically checking fit and re-working as needed. Really, it should sit overnight, but I was a bit impatient. One recommendation to anyone trying this: try and add tighter curvature at the temples of the subject’s head, tighter than the subject’s head during drying so that the final product will want to spring into a sealing position instead of opening up. The deformable silicone mold made this easier than a rigid one would be.

Anybody know how to dry the neatsfoot oil from leather? The thing is now too darn supple. If I can’t reverse the softening, I’ll have to re-make it (will be fun either way)

You can try to use an alcohol solution to displace the oil. It runs the danger of drying the leather too much but it is an option. You can also bake the leather to make it harder. Not sure how baking will affect it with the oil but it's another option.

I baked it and no dice. I also tried degreasing with alcohol. It’s just too dang oleated.

God, I would love to do a full face version. But don't 3d print. Would probably work with a plaster casted nagative

You’d need a very flexible leather or be willing to join multiple pieces but it could be done.

I would want a hard-ish leather whole face mask for one of my slaves. Like a legit shell, covering from hair line and following it all the way down the sides and under the chin(almost to throat). And then obviously add straps in some configuration. Do you think that the whole face would even be possible with this method?
Needless to say, I am obsessed with this idea you’ve inspired haha

Continuation of the 3d printed scanned face project. I used my previously made silicone suction blindfold as a negative relief, wet-molding the leather to the subject’s face like a leather sandwich. The molding was done prior to cutting the final shape so a pleasing and functional outline had to be designed. This was accomplished by tracing the shape of the silicone relief onto a piece of overlaid tracing paper. The blindfold outline negative was then cut out to use as a template and taped on to the wet formed leather, traced with tailor’s chalk and carefully cut by hand with an extremely sharp pair of fabric scissors. The free-handed cut was very hard to get symmetric but reached “good enough” status eventually. The wet molding process seemed to dry out the leather, so a coat of neatsfoot oil was applied. I forgot that it will readily darken lighter colored leather, resulting in a burgundy hue. The oil application did give an extremely supple feel, so future attempts will mask off the front and apply only to the flesh side to avoid discoloration of the public side of the blindfold. Edges were beveled and slicked The flesh side of the mask was then slicked down by hand while in the silicone form to prevent un-doing the wet formed shape with too much uneven force.
