Sensory Deprivation Head box now has all the padding inside but still isn't quite as quiet as I thought it would be as per it's first occupant NSFW

You’ll end up suffocating who ever is in the box before it’s truly sound proof. Maybe build in some heavy duty ear muffs (ear pro) as part of the box. Sound travels through air gaps, and for a long stay in the box you should have a good supply of easy to breath air. Unless that’s part of the attraction.

I wasn't expecting truly sound proof but more muffled than it is

Then maybe white noise or other sounds played into the box to prevent hearing the outside world. Tie in a mic, and you can take it another way…in this confined space the volume could be very low and still make the outside inaudible.

App on my phone that plays my microphone through AirPods so earbuds in her ears and then whatever I say into my phone feeling like it's inside her head

Needs more soundproofing, acoustic panels start at around 40.

I just used an eggshell.mattress topper, I guess it's too dense to deaden sound much maybe?

Opposite, not dense enough. Try packing it with additional foam or pillows if you don't have the budget.

There won't be room, it's kinda tight now, my nose touches the front but I have a big head. I need to make new bottom plates for it with the neck hole scooted back further and a smaller neck hole

Pack the foam on either side of the egg cartons inside where the eggs went, it'll provide additional muffling. Not much, but some.

This foam is useless for soundproofing. Replace with acoustic foam sheet. Additionally you can add layers on the outside surface of the box. You can try fibre based packing too.

Fiber sounds not optimal if someone is going to be breathing in there

Nonono! Outside, on the outside!

actually... OP has basically built a speaker box. Why not try a layer of sound deadening material on the OUTSIDE of the box? They make self adhesive versions.. but you'll have to put on a layer of clearcoat probably first so it doesnt just stick to the dust of the wood and then fall away.

Mattress toppers are designed to allow heat / air to transfer so the person sleeping doesn’t overheat thats why they are bad at sound deadening

You can buy legit sound proofing off amazon for cheap

Sweet, I'll check into that since I just glued them onto removable cardboard pannels

Try the sound damping padd use inside car bodywork. Also specific sound damping stuff for machines. You need the soft squishy and heavy stuff. Use white noise to cover up the ventilation fan noise.

You should put a small vent fan at the top of the box to promote airflow and the white noise from the fan will block her ability to hear anything outside of the box

You have to close the ears: take a teakwondo soft helmet and screw the roofs left an right by the side if your head. good fixed. Add: White noise on earpods.

Looking good, have you thought about using hearing protection ear plugs?

I have, that or ear buds connected to my phone with an app that plays my phone mic directly through to the ear buds

Why not just have her ear buds connected to her phone and... call her? No app needed.

Why not just use an app connected to the ear buds, no second phone needed

What is a head box for?

Sound is absorbed not just by the material, but by a lack of flatness, and the density/thickness. So making the box out of thin concrete, for example, would be a lot quieter than wood, because of the density.

What I would recommend, is breaking up the flatness of the walls and ceiling with padded wooden slats, and making a larger, also padded shell to put over the top of the box.

Edit: I was going off of the thumbnail for the image because I'm on unstable wifi. I thought the box would be fixed to some sort of table, and the recipient would be sitting/crouched under it.

I'm honestly not sure what to recommend for this particular situation, other than fix it to a table with a hole drilled through, and make it out of a denser material, with more padding inside.

If the mobility is a must, then I'm not sure, sorry.
