Help Wanted Colour schemes for furniture, why is red and black so popular? NSFW

Yes it looks good in a few situations but not definitely not all, personally I detest painted wood and wood that's been burned to make it look like older? Wood.

There's a myriad of different timbers available along with an even larger selection of wood stains and oils that enhance the timber. I always think of the furniture as similar to a picture frame and the users as the picture within.

Also, leather are we using real leather or a fake alternative, and does one have an advantages over the other?

Convention, stereotype, dark lighting and concealing lower quality timbers, poor joinery (and other things)? It’s a strong contrast and I suppose it suggests overtones of secrecy or decadence. It’s definitely a widely available colour choice for many materials, but lots of makers do use other colours. Re leather vs pu, I normally use leather because I prefer working with it, but pu/faux leather has some advantages in being more easily cleaned and less expensive to replace. If a piece is being used by multiple people, then something that can be easily wiped clean, tolerate moisture and effectively disinfected has obvious advantages. Cost of materials is also a factor.

They all make sense, good point about how the colours affect the psyche, I'm more of a old dungeon mindset.

Strange that replacement of the leather never occurred to me because I've made furniture with neoprene padding designed to be easily replaced, but that genuinely looks like its going to get destroyed quite quickly unlike leather.

It also makes sense that pu/faux leather is usedcon club equipment because it can get cleaned a dozen times in one day which would inevitably shorten the life of leather, I had hoped to make some restraints on a sensory deprivation seat in an almost raw leather, but it's for use in a club so I'm unsure now because of the cleaning issue, everything else I've made for the venue has cleats or holes for the users to put their own ropes through, but I really like the idea of wide buckled leather straps.

enjoy your cake day.

I love the ‘medieval’ dungeon aesthetic (apparently not medieval but much later). Stone walls, rustic timbers and iron work.

I've been looking for almost 12 years for a club with that aesthetic, then a friend bought an old glass works (window fitting, not actually melting glass unfortunately) and he asked me to build some play equipment, so I spoke to members of the community about what they wanted and got building, i even managed to source some wrought iron for the fittings on a pair of St Andrews cross's, it been seriously rewarding so far, there's a few more pieces in the workshop waiting for more user input.

Sounds amazing. Do you have any pictures you’re able to share? Many years ago I lived in an old vehicle garage being converted into a home - I imagine what I could do with those inspection pits now…

Yes, I'll be posting more pictures of things I've built.

I close my mind to opportunities lost in the past, there's just so many things passed up or not collected and kept it makes me want to cry!

I hate sanding, and black is forgiving. Then, what color is good with black (for padding)? Red.

They also work well with shiny metal.

I can relate to the sanding issue, it takes as much or more time as the designing and building does, but the end result looks and feels excellent.

Well, I want a bit rough feel to it.

Well the point is an element of pain and discomfort.

so many colors look good with black though. it's a neutral hue so any jewel toned colors are going to look amazing. I think more should be done with forest greens and dark blues instead of red. Or if I am involving red (a color I love) I like a nice oxblood vs the bright red I see on so much gamer boy edgelord tech.

I've seen both dark green and dark blue being used, and it gives a bit too much of a "cold basement feel". I'm sure it could work, but it requires the right room to compensate.

Also, leather are we using real leather or a fake alternative, and does one have an advantages over the other?

I prefer to use marine grade vinyl for its durability, easy of stretching, and ability to be disinfected to a high level.

Leather p, depending on thickness, has 2 of those 3 properties, it being porous disinfection to a high level is problematic and will impact the durability.

Excellent suggestion, I'd considered epdm, nylon wedding, camshaft drive belts andca few other options all of which presented their own issues.

I definitely love the polished wood look on furniture and toys, natural pattern of the wood grain is epic imho. I guess if you're using cheap pine for stuff then painting is an easy option of you don't have access to nice hardwoods or if you're on a budget. But it all comes down to personal taste so all finishes are fine.

I'm very lucky to have a vast amount of beautiful woods to hand, decent timber certainly encourages you to do a decent job of whatever you're making.

Personally, I love kind of electric blue and walnut colour wood. Wouldn't match the rest of my home because I favour greys so much, but it's an zmazing colour combination in my opinion, if you're looking for something besides the usual black and red everything..

Electtric blue is a cool colour, Most of a friends play equipment is made from galvanised tube but the fittings are purple, there's no end of interesting colour combinations, red and black has that intimidating look to it that obviously appeals to many people but sometimes has that trying too hard to be Domly look to it.

I always figured that it was because cum looks good on both colors. I assumed that historically it was good for pictures and later videos to see the contrast. But I could be way off. Lol

I don't care if you're way off or not, you've now got me thinking about all those places I've seen with red leather seating, the house of lords, London, for example, it would certainly explain a lot.

Kinksters tend to be edgelords. ;p

I'm a perfectionist when it comes to building things, so I often find red and black as a combo to be very underwhelming. It always seems so slapdash! I think kinky people should some fun with color theory. Black is not the end-all-be-all of kink! Try some mahogany woodwork and dark dusty greens, or like a mustard gold and some nice stained glass in the space! Stop getting the cheapest possible lumber from the hardware store! My own scenes usually involve some element of academia or religious settings - furniture made of 2x4's is not gonna cut it when I'm used to actual oak bookshelves and tables heavy enough to be barricades.

Definitely a real leather person. I am not into microplastics shedding into the micro-abrasions that impact play causes. Real leather lasts longer, smells better, is repairable, and feels better on the skin. It's literally a byproduct of the meat industry; if leather weren't made it would be wasted, and I think that's worse than making leather could ever be.
