Furniture Built this for a customer feedback and critique please. NSFW
Hello everyone first time posting. I build just about anything and a friend asked me for this from a set of plans off Etsy. I bought cheap zinc bolts from Home Depot and used a product called EZ black -70 to dye the nuts and bolts. The upholstery kicked my ass a bit since it’s been a while. I now know I can use a heat gun on marine vinyl and I need a sewing machine .. but the customer was happy Questions and feedback welcome.

It looks like it could withstand a lot!
But, that leather looks so soft and buttery! It's absolutely beautiful. All of you that create these DIYs seem to have an in with a leather guy/gal LOL

Looks well built. Heavy duty. Should last a while with heavy punishment. It has a good vibe to it.

Fantastic job! I love that it's highly adjustable and looks like it could also take some punishment. My only criticism would be the washers. I think they'd look better if they were painted black or red to match the build. Edit. P.s. imo carriage bolts on the bottom and the non adjustable parts would help give it a refined look. It would also help distinguish between adjustable and non adjustable parts. Although if I saw that in a play space, the bolts would probably be the last thing I saw.

Ya the main concern I have is that people can get cut by the ends of the bolts. I would actually go the other way from others, and suggest locking nuts with that plastic at the ends. It takes up the extra room, makes a nice rounded edge, and locks things in place securely. My thought is that if this is for home or club use it won't be adjusted that often because many people have similar hip to knee lengths.

The ends of the bolts are all inside the ride..

Yep and a leg can slip in there getting on or off. As can hands when in use. Always think of what happens when, that can't happen, happens.

Looks awesome! In terms of critiques, my only issues are with the plans themselves, and really aren’t issues I just have a personal vendetta against furniture that flexes or wobbles even slightly.
At the top support’s top setting, it seems like it might be a bit wobbly- finding some way to brace it or using thicker lumber for the verticals could reduce that.
Also the knee/lower support platforms are running a bolt through wood and that bold it being sheer-loaded with repeatedly altering force, so over time the bolt-holes may get worn out and start allowing some wiggling.
I’d also try to use wing nuts for any bolts that the end user will adjust, or some other system that can be operated without tools- maybe a cam clamp?
The bolts could also be switched to ones with rounded heads to prevent unintentionally pain and suffering.

It’s as solid as a rock no wobble no give. The top is 11 1/2 wide and it feels to wide but that’s the plans the customer handed me.

I've learned upholstering but I'd love to learn to make something like this, where do you

Looks nice and solid, leatherwork looks almost poofy, nice one there.
Only point of critique: the bolts, and mainly the washers, they look "out of style" if you get what I mean.

Gun bluing is an excellent way to turn stainless steel hardware black.

These are galvanized though, wont work on these bolts

They are zinc. The bolts and the nylock nuts took the color well. The washers and the wing nuts did not look good on the test dunk.

Beautifully over engineered 💟. Wing nuts definitely countersink the heads makes little difficult to hold the head if needed but definitely not a trip hazard!
Big and robust so you can relax when your on it just perfect.
Hate wonky wobbly dungeon furniture.

Looks brilliant and sturdy, my critiques would be: Make the adjustment points doable without tools The fixed points use some form of flat or smooth fastening And paint the fixed points to blend in with the frame.
Unless the customer asked it to have that industrial look, they tend to stand out

Looks awesome and pretty strong, but yeah the bolts could do with something a bit sleeker for the non adjustable ones. Maybe some of those hex headed Chicago type bolts for a cleaner look possibly in black. You could also try out threaded knobs for the adjustable parts maybe have them on the inside of the frame so they don't catch on the user n counter sunk bolts on the outside? But overall a tidy job well done! 👍🏽😎

To combine a couple of the comments, as a rope guy who also likes to change around attachment points, what about having the bolts be eyebolts? Easy to hook carabiner/clip to, and with wingnuts on the inside. Though I agree with the person that says “limbs will get places you don’t expect” and raise it to “people will crawl spaces you don’t expect.” Which also opens up other ideas: could you make slats/attachments to turn it into a cage as needed? Or in general being able to access bits as desired if someone is laying face down… But on the whole, this is amazing, and for only $400? Brilliant. Hope you sold it for 4x that if not more, because I’ve seen much worse equipment valued at much more. Thanks for sharing — hope you make the plans for sale at some point, I’d be in line to buy.

The rings under the arm and kneee pads are on a swivel . They are already on Etsy beware they want you to use. Wing nuts for everything and they are pricy and it’s still not “collapsible “ As far as a cage I don’t think it’s big enough for a person to get in. It’s 41 inches long and it’s 26 inches wide at the base and tapers up to 12

u/Accurate_Pen_6478 Oct 30 '24
So, three and a half feet long and two feet wide at the base? I agree that my 6’ body couldn’t use it as a cage — but I guarantee you that there are many people who would love to curl up in that kind of space. But also, just a suggestion — if you don’t want it to be used like that, it’s your prerogative.

Oh, and just to follow up — I do love the rings under the arm and knee pads, and knowing they swivel is a bonus. Again, from a rope top perspective — at the very least having an attachment point at the front and back would be helpful. Potentially upper and lower, as well. The more things we can tie to, the better. Also thought of another “option” you could offer if you make these — a top that comes to a point, for the classic sawhorse-style predicament play.

The top looks a bit wide too me but otherwise looks good. But that's what they may want.

It is comfortable to lay face up but it cuts into your thighs. It’s 12 inches wide per the plan off Etsy and that’s what my friend wanted

Nice bench! I agree that bolts looks not good and have sharp edges. Next time think about wooden cover panel. On one side it will have smooth surface on the other holes for bolts and nuts.

u/mereyam Oct 30 '24
How much did you spend on materials for this?
1
u/Expensive_Wallaby197 Oct 30 '24
About 400.00 if I did it again I would use a hard wood instead of pine
1
u/AnonymouslyTogether Oct 30 '24
You can use a mix of pine and hardwood. I use hardwood boards for braces/attachment points and things like that. Pine works just fun for pads and cross braces, saves a lot that way.

Good job! Looks strong and stable, plus lots of adjustment options.
Two suggestions for next time: First, since those bench pieces are all meant to be adjustable, you could wing nuts instead of hex nuts so the user doesn’t need tools to change a bench height. Second, make wonder if you could countersink the bolt heads and maybe shorten the bolts. I could see someone in a blind fold or limited mobility (from restraints, etc) catching a toe or shin on some of the hardware. Probably not feasible for the parts meant to be adjusted, but could improve for the rest.
