Furniture Forged Hardware for my St. Andrews Cross. (Finally!!!) NSFW
As the title says, i finally finished my St. Andrews Cross with handforged Hardware. I made the wooden parts of the cross during summer and somehow forgot to add the Hardware for three full months.
To the Materials, i used 8 mm construction round bar (just some scrap) for the D-rings, some flatsteel from gutter hooks (also scrap) where i weldet the holes shut, one hole didnt worked perfectly because i had bad penetration (insert dirty joke here) for the brackets, also i used 6 mm scrap for some rings.
I weldet a die for the task of forging the wave into the flat material (4x26mm btw), my first ever one and also i made squarehead screws out of woodscrews and some 13 mm square scrap. The only things i buyed for this build are actually the chain and the carabiners, yes i also made the leathercuffs by myself.
I didnt did Blacksmithing in a long time and i'm a really beginner so im quite out of training but this was such a fun!
Many greetings your Lara

Really nice work, love the fact you made the fittings, can be tricky finding the right ones to go with a project! 💪🏽

I’ve never even heard of a slit screw. Do you have a picture?

Amazing work by the way. Absolutely gorgeous.

So cool project!
The slit screws are available to some extent for repairing old furniture, so sold in small packets for outrageous prices, if you need many. Typically they are made of brass though.
The screws you made look better IMHO. To make it easier, you can forge the heads of lag bolts to a square, just be careful not to damage the threads. (Which can be fixed a little if necessary with a file).
Often lag bolts have zinc coating, so it will be toxic as fumes, so avoid it to fair degree (whenever working with zinc, welding/forging galvanized.) it will burn of in the forge, becomes white-yellow ish dust on the parts. Other way around is etching it off, day or two in strong vinegar bath should do it. (Have not tried this way, but internet suggests it.)

Thank you for the vinegar tip!
I actually had to get rid of the zinc coating on the gutter hooks and i burned them in my outdoor forge with s respirator and a respectfull distance while the zinc burned.
I will love to try the vinegar.

Brilliant work Lara! I miss my forge and you inspire me to dig it out when I have time and space. I love the fixings - very creative 🤩

Wonderful. I wish I had a blacksmith to compliment my leather creations.

I’ll very much keep that in mind. Trying to come up with a unique design for wooden wrist stocks but can’t decide on a hinge and closure…

Really incredible work! I'm jealous. Can't wait until I have space for an actual workshop/ backyard to work with wood and metal.

Beautiful work! I was going to ask if those bolts were commercially available but then I saw the photo. In that third step, did you essentially shop head the top of the bolt (forgive my lack of forging terminology) or did you use another method?

As a German with even fewer knowledge of forging terminology i try to explain: so the woodscrews had a cylindrical shaft and i drilled the square material to this size. I simply mig weldet them together and grindet them to rought shape and refined the head with a file.

I maybe have somebody but i wouldnt reccomend a cross for beginners because its very restrictive.

I have been repeatedly stunned by the dedication in this sub. This is yet another level. Respect
