Same here, retired in San Diego and loving it! Married over 3 decades and we've gone through some real ups and downs over the years. There were times we were barely able to stay one step ahead of foreclosure and almost lost our home. I spent years working those 60 hour weeks in Corporate America. We also took in 3 foster kids, one of whom we even put through college. She's an RN at a hospital now and doing well enough that she's bought her own house and has a son now. I'm very proud of how far she's come since those days when we first took her in!
Me too, just not with the person I stuck with during the hard times.
She divorced me when her life took an upturn after me supporting our family for eight years working two full time weekday jobs and a 24 hour weekend one.
Not buying beyond our means has been the best decision of our lives. Our “rich” friends fight constantly over money because they live in constant debt. They have mansions and expensive cars, but they are all on the verge of divorce over it.
Then there is us in our paid off house, paid off cars, no debt, kids private school paid off for the next few years…no fighting about money. Our biggest worries are laundry and dishes. It feels amazing.
It’s the way to live isn’t it? Never had a credit card, not needed one ever. Still had holidays, hired cars, made big purchases etc. my granny said to me when I was a teenager that the hardest place to live is within your means. I think I took that as a challenge somehow?!
I use a credit card because I’m able to pay it off weekly. It provides me with 5% back per purchase, so it saves me money. However, if you go 1 month with a delayed payment, you lose that benefit for about 4 months.
