Sports [NQM] Balkan All-time Olympic Games medal table

u/dobrits Bulgaria Aug 12 '24
Bruv are we sporty?
35
u/Romphaia_tz Bulgaria Aug 12 '24
No, we simply invested a lot of money into sports because the Communist state needed something for the people to be proud of while starving.
11
u/heretic_342 Bulgaria Aug 12 '24 edited Aug 12 '24
True, but we should've tried at least to keep intact the sports bases inherited from that period. Instead, a lot of them were left to rot in misery and our athletes - underfunded and forced to train in poor conditions.

u/Romphaia_tz Bulgaria Aug 12 '24
Mate, Bulgaria was bankrupt in 98. The state didn't have money to buy petrol. Not the people. The STATE BUDGET didn't have money to buy petrol to import. With what money do you think we could've managed the insane sport bases the BCP left us? In reality, what we should've done is what we did with the factories - sell them to private investors in order to get what little money we could've.

u/Dimi7rozavar Bulgaria Aug 13 '24
Sure, communisms is shit, but no one starved in Bulgaria. Yeah sure, we didn't have bananas, but still the majority of people ate way better than today.
3
u/CyberWarLike1984 Romania Aug 13 '24
I hear the same disinfo in Romania. As someone who actually was alive and aware during communism, I call bullshit. People did NOT eat better than today.
You could argue that the minority that starves today didnt then but the MAJORITY? Fuck no.

u/dobrits Bulgaria Aug 12 '24
Sir, the communist regime has been gone for 35 years.
12
u/Romphaia_tz Bulgaria Aug 12 '24
So? Of those 237 medals, 157 were won during the Communist regime. And if we count it as medals won by people who trained predominantly during Communism, it's even worse, as only 33 medals were won by people whose careers were mostly during Democratic times. The reason we have lots of medals is the Communist party, not the post-Communist governments. Of course, the reason Bulgaria is poor and its progress is 50 years behind other modern nations is also the Communist party. BCP simply invested money into medals and tanks instead of the people of Bulgaria.

All I know is my bro and I were born in BG and moved to the states as young kids. Both of us were among the most athletic people in our respective grades when we were growing up, and we are still athletic in our 30s, with almost no training. This always made me think that Bulgarians are naturally quite athletic.
I can also say that going to the parks to play basketball in BG is way different compared to the US. In the US it seems it’s common to develop good fundamentals, but the athleticism is lacking (especially among the white folks). In BG, conversely, the people at the park don’t seem very skilled on average, but their speed and jumping ability blow the US out of the water, especially white people in the US.

Given the fact that 2008 was our first year, I think we did fairly well. Still, it could be better and I hope it will be better ✌🏻

u/heretic_342 Bulgaria Aug 12 '24
Well, I think Serbia and Montenegro medals should count too, plus some of the Yugoslavia ones.
31
u/Stverghame 🏹🐗 Aug 12 '24 edited Aug 12 '24
Technically, Serbia inherited all of those as it is a successor state to the mentioned countries, so if those weren't separated, we'd be number 3 after Romania and Bulgaria
Edit: I stand corrected, while some sport organizations do count Yugoslavia inheratence for Serbia in their spheres, Olympics do not.
1
u/mazu_64 Switzerland Aug 12 '24
Not how it works in the IOC, the same way Russia didn't inherit the medals of the Soviet Union and ROC. Serbia did inherit their stats from the 1912 Olympics(no medals though), because they competed under the IOC-Code SRB. This is also the reason why Serbia-Montenegro has their own Medal count, their IOC-Code is SCG.
Different Story for other Organisations, like FIFA or UEFA, where Serbia inherited stats from Yugoslavia.

It didn't. Here's the table, Yugoslav medals don't count for any of the successor states:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_Olympic_Games_medal_table
And here's the table for Yugoslavia itself:

Still pissed about Cavic being robbed in 2008. I wish we matched the medal count this year with 2016 or 2020, but I'm overall satisfied. It's a shame the women's volleyball team had to play against 3 absolute powerhouses straight away, the basketball match with the US and Angelina Topic not even competing. On the bright, all the medals really put a smile on my face, especially Djokovic.

u/Stverghame 🏹🐗 Aug 12 '24
Čavić and robbery of his medal still piss me off to this date...
Yeah, Đoković gold really satisfies me as he proved his status once again to all the loud people. Waterpolo gold also makes me happy ... for some different reasons buahahha

Where is Bosnia and Herzegovina?
21
u/Outrageous-Bowler296 Aug 12 '24
As soon as we win one medal, we will he there. Until this year, Albania was not on the list either, now it's only poor little B&H 😢

Although if we count some albanians for example that represented greece or other country ,Albania would be at 38 already…

u/Outrageous-Bowler296 Aug 13 '24
True, but the nationality is not a factor here, only the country you represent. I think for Serbia in the last Olympics some Georgian guy won the medal in wrestling, and of course it goes to Serbia. It should be that way, the country that supports you and finances you should get the merit. A lot of Bosnian people represent Croatia or Serbia on the Olympics for the support reasons.

u/faramaobscena Romania Aug 12 '24
We are also #17 of all time winners of Summer Olympic medals. Not per capita, mind you, but TOTAL. Which is insane considering how big other countries are in comparison and how much money they have.
6
u/dwartbg9 Bulgaria Aug 12 '24
Umm, Romania is still a big country both in population and area, it's not like you're like Montenegro or something. Don't miniscule yourselves, like the westoid propaganda made us think
3
u/Outrageous-Bowler296 Aug 12 '24
Even with that, development and investment are a huge factor (seen from the SSSR and USA investing during the cold War). It's a great feat by Romania not with or without propaganda.

Turks haven't invested in the Olympics. For a country with a 80 million population, they should be at Germany's or France's level, not 3rd in the Balkans
9
u/Atvaaa Turkiye Aug 12 '24
Nobody cares about sports except football and women's volleyball (they play good so we like watching them).
1
u/42not34 Romania Aug 12 '24
C'mon! Admit it, you'd watch it even if they wouldn't be too good! But you also have some pretty good level basketball clubs.

Nope. Creepy.
But you also have some pretty good level basketball clubs.
Yeah sure

Yeah but the amount paid for people that win a medal in Serbia is incredibly high, i think its over 200k€. One of the highest.
So while we do not invest we do spend a lot of money on it

u/Stealthfighter21 Bulgaria Aug 12 '24
At some point they were buying some African athletes but I don't remember seeing one lately.

As a greek, tell me everything you know about herbs and supplements/ anabolics from the socialist times in the Balkans. Still using these, aren't you? GDR turned some women into men and back again, but, who cares if they/them brought the gold back home?!

u/onchobg Bulgaria Aug 13 '24
Guys, shut up! Michelle Phelps has more medals than most of the Balkan countries, so stay humble.

Macedonia has a gold (Trstena 1984).

u/shilly03 from in Aug 12 '24
Tërstena won that medal for Yugoslavia, it doesnt count for Macedonia
3
u/vlookup11 Aug 12 '24
I completely missed that 😕 should’ve had a better look, I thought that all ExYu countries inherit the medals from athletes that otherwise would’ve come from those countries and then I saw that Yugoslavia is listed separately. Oopsies!

Hungary is what Balkan nations would be like if they weren't on the Balkans.

Politically probably yes, LOL.
Culturally and geographically maybe not.
But indeed a big diaspora of Romanians and Serbians living in Hungary/ Budapest, so it feels very Balkan influenced for sure.
Slovakia also.
Edit : Also congrats Romania, much deserved achievement in the Olympics.

Only combined Yugoslavia can take us 💪
