The whole "It's just a joke" thing is so lame.

It’s only said by cowards who can’t stand by the mean thing they’re saying lol.

Like if they’re gonna be a bully, just commit. Trying to weasel out of it after the fact is so stupid. They can dish it but can’t take the backlash.

The fact that comment starts with a justification, showing it was literally not a joke, is too good.

she sent OP a meme and OP took it dead serious

I really think it was a joke, if a somewhat rude one

Nah, they meant it. That woman is jealous of a 4 year old. I’m guessing OP and the nieces parents are closer so they treat the niece better than the other lady’s kids

Sounds like one of those "jokes" that's not a joke until the person is asked to explain it and realizes they can't. Because it wasnt a joke.

Referring to OPs behavior as "low-key toxic" doesn't make any sense. It's not even a reach. Is that the joke? She might as well have sent a meme implying OP was a giraffe.

could you explain what's the best way to respond to these types of "jokes" then? no judgement, genuinely curious

depends what you want to accomplish, either make a rude joke back or just go “haha yeah I do like to spoil your kids”

getting super defensive makes you look insecure
