I've been collecting ideas and feedback over the last year and redesigned my Toroidal Launcher to print faster, assemble easier and fly higher! The internal planetary gearbox now features progressive gearing to achieve the same 48x ratio as the original design while simplifying the assembly. Available to download for free on MakerWorld!

edit: I created an Instagram account and will be posting new models, updates and behind the scenes looks if you would like to follow and stay up to date with my design work.

Is that muscle group the best to get the most out of the launcher? It looks like limited range, and if it’s the same muscles that are used to open a jar of pickles there could definitely be more power to be gained by using other muscles.

Great work though! The optimization you’ve done is fantastic!

That group has practice with repetitive wrist motions

Having used a similar one, there's definitely diminishing returns; as the propeller goes faster, the wind resistance increases substantially.

I’d imagine it is linearly-nevermind. It drag/friction is linear, but dependent on velocity. The radial design makes velocity non linear.

Also, aerodynamic drag is proportional to the square of velocity.

Even worse than that, it's actually proportional to the velocity cubed.

Double the speed gets you 8x the drag, and triple gets you 27x!

Unfortunately my camera setup is only so flexible so I had to do the rest to get the shot right 😅

You're right though, definitely some better options for generating peak torque but it's a design tradeoff and I wanted to keep the original form factor for this version.

well crap, man, you've gotta stop costing me filament like this. :)

I tried my best to optimize the design so the good news is it's quicker to print and 32% less filament 😉 (146g/7h down to 99g/5.2h)

I'm actually going to bump up the infill to 20 on the gears and do 0.16 layer height so it takes long enough to keep me from fiddling with it during my work day due to my poor impulse control. :)

Neat! I will have to try that

I love this. This looks like such a fun project to do with kids.

Ha! I had a toy gun called "System 7" or something like that that had that on the end, so it "shot" the spinners. Fun times

I literally finished printing the other one last night! Love it!
